Came here to say for the record that I worked with a couple of guys here in Canada who left the UK. The one from Manchester saw Hendrix at the Marquee and was a huge blues fan, chill guy. Visited the Cotswolds one summer and loved the ancient history, beautiful landscapes, and hospitable people. Dunno why people make fun of British food as it's actually really good, I especially liked the full breakfasts, best tomatoes I've had.

From what I've read, William kept his followers from rebelling against him by giving them fragmented pieces of land (as opposed to a huge chunk where they could raise an army), and I'll bet that people who had fought for him and were lower on the totem poll got land to balance out the power of the senior followers.
