The manga would be better if Furuya didn't exist at all. Sawamura needed a massive hurdle to get over with Furuya but now that he's better than Furuya everything Furuya does is terrible. He's a boring character with zero personality and it doesn't even make sense that he's still the ace.

It would be worse. I am for one glad that the rival is not one dimensional muh you beneath me attitude. I see disgressed Furuya as a beginning of his character development. If sensei decides to make Sawamura the ace in Furuya expense, I will be dissapointed. That cheapens both character.
