Ceruleans don't revert a Friend back to whatever they got transformed from, they create a new body based on that Friend's base animal.

Time for some hardmode truths Sup Forums doesn't want to admit. Reality has to be faced eventually, though.

Sandstar does not "convert" animals into Friends. It scans them and the sandstar itself generates the Friend and/or Cerulean. This is why you see supposed "female" Friends with "male" traits-- they are actually neither gender, they are a new neuter entity that displays biological traits from across the spectrum of the individual species and contains that species' genetic memory of its instinctive behavior. This is what allows sandstar to create Friends from both living and deceased organic matter. Friends are basically a superposition of their species' potential, when a Friend's remaining sandstar is exhausted or consumed by a cerulean, the potentiality collapses into a new individual, gendered animal of the source species. This is why a new friend of the same species loses most of its memory of its past incarnation, it's essentially a new entity-- however, it does appear sandstar has some form of memetic capability, perhaps a central sandstar processing unit inside the volcano that stores the friend data it reads from living matter, and so small traces of memories can pass from one generation of friend to the next.
