It's very typical today user, I don't know how and what they actually did here, so I am just thinking what I would have done.

What's very typical is to code a small trojan that you inject to say a bmp image(probably premade modules for this in metasploit forinstance too), and it simply takes over a common windows process it's easy to do. This trojan then calls home to some server where you have the nastier shit loaded, which also makes it modular.

And then you typically have full access to the computer.

This is a very common pattern today, that payload do whatever for you, if it's to steal crypto, steal all your files or whatever. Tons of viruses that act like this now. You alway see you first get one if it's caught by a an anti virus, then maybe like 30s-1min later then comes the nasty payload. First ones are typically classfied as win32/hacktool.
