I've had this conversation before with family about how at the time of the run up to the Rising, there was no such thing as a Socialist Republic anywhere much less in Ireland. I like to think that a large part of of what makes socialist countries so awful is aping the USSR and that Connolly and co. weren't following a manual so much as finding a path of their own, which naturally would have been the "Socialism with Chinese characteristics" of the West, and one specifically catered to and around the Irish situation. I'm not saying that I'm a socialist or anything and I prefer a Collins-esque third way but I tend to give the turn of the century socialists the benefit of the doubt. There's no excuse nowadays though certainly.
