In the third or fourth episode Reiner and Berholt said they are from a mountain village outside of wall Maria.
Why did no one react to this? I thought everone lived inside the walls.
Living outside the walls, it's amazing they weren't attacked much sooner.
What am i missing here (looking for the spoiler free version)?

They said they lived inside of wall Maria, under Shiganshina district, so when Armored titan destroyed the gate of it, titans get to their village.
