Hey Sup Forums Started reading Medaka Box cause I think I saw one of the images on here. Started pretty fun with them getting into shenigans to solve a problem in and help everyone, And then it started to be all about weird psycho kids fighting with crazy abnormal abilities for reasons.
I just wanna know will the manga get back to fun little stuff like the watersports competition was? Or is it super powered kids who all have AB blood type for some annoying reason for the rest of it?
Jacob Collins
It's fighting until the end but keep reading, Minus arc is worth it. I think it starts around chapter 60 or so, you can drop it if you don't like Kumagawa.
Sebastian Diaz
>high school battle manga
yeah no
Camden Stewart
I stopped when her older brother was introduced. Talking about how she was twice as strong in middle school, and how she used to heal injuries within 30minutes. It was just me realizing the manga was going from her being near-perfect girl to some kinda mutant with heal factor. Also I kept wondering why everyone was just fine with all the things going on. Little girls with giant wreckingballs and school police who are killing people with bouncy balls and kids with fucking swords in a school? It just felt like it had changed writers compared to the story about "who cut up the running shoes".
Austin Kelly
It's all absolute bullshit from there on out.
Everyone will be getting superpowers for no reason while the narrative badly claims it's based on some form of human feat.
And instead of Medaka being a mary sue in a comedy/relaxed setting, we get her being mary sue in dramatic settings. So she becomes the absolute worst.
On the other hand that guy with the screws seems somewhat fun(Not that I'd know after dropping it after reading all the fights with the ones in OPs image). So read for him I guess if you really feel like it.
Aaron Rogers
I think this is a very good suggestion.
Medaka becomes absolutely insufferable. Kumagawa easily carries whatever arc centers around him. If you don't like him, you might as well drop it because everything else is a lot of the same shit.
I ended up liking Zenkichi a lot as well and his progression through the series, so even though a lot of it was annoying, I enjoyed it for that at least.
>mfw this fucking scene
Terrible feels.
Adam Lewis
Dang I preferred her more in the relaxed setting. I guess I'll stop now before I just end up reading 80issues I don't enjoy. But I'll keep it in mind if I ever get into a battle school manga mood.
Lucas Wilson
Nisio Isin is a hack.
Michael Thomas
Why would you listen to the guy who dropped it right after the fighting shounen arc and right before the best arc?
Austin Morales
Because he sounded like someone who also preferred when it was comedy/relaxed.
And really I struggled to get through the story of the 10 year old leader of the school police who used the rules as an excuse to possibly kill teenagers with super strength and custom made bouncy balls while being so one-dimensionally evil it made Gargamel from the Smurfs seem a deep character. And I'm sure further arcs are better than that part, but they sound like they'll stay similar to that part.
James Reed
I could only read like 20 chapters of MB. I don't get how it has so much praise on here. I couldn't stand the two leads.
Charles Green
It's good in the first few arcs where they're problem solvers, then the first two fighting arcs (morals committee and the + group) are dogshit for being not just a strange change of genre but also really poorly executed, then the - arc starts a little dumb and gets really fucking good, then it keeps ramping up until around the last one or two arcs where it plummets again. All in all I think it's a pretty good series but what it starts as and what it becomes are so drastically different that it's really hard to recommend it to anyone.
Oliver Torres
I like the leads and pretty much all the characters so far (minus 10 year old "oh I'm so evil" kid from the 13) But I just don't like that it's gonna be just super-kids fighting and prolly killing each other from here on.
Ryder Peterson
>they'll stay similar to that part They won't. But they won't go back to being like the first arc either. That's because it's praised for the minus/election arc which is after the arc OP posted. Almost no one cared about the manga before Kumagawa and Ajimu were introduced.
Blake Mitchell
here, for everyone who quit after 20 capter, medaka box pre chapter 55 is completely different from post 55
Gavin Rogers
So is there a particular reason WHY the story makes this change in genre? Like a change in writers, or a writer given free reign of the kinda story he WANTED to do? Or did someone tell him "hey we got greenlit, our manga is now 100+ issues long" and he went "I can't possibly think of 100+ issues worth of problem solving shenanigans, we're gonna have to come up with a new direction for this manga."
Michael Johnson
Okay the anime is more tolerable? I might look into it.
Carson Clark
Because Nisio is an incorrigible metafag who'd rather play around with shounen cliches than writing a coherent story. Not that I'm complaining.
Matthew Lewis
Probably either low ratings or Nisio just getting bored, maybe both. Post-Suggestion Box it certainly feels more like his other works so I don't think it was something he was against doing.
Gabriel Sullivan
Its a common trend among shounen manga to start out as comedy because its easier to survive. you can also transition over to battle manga, and if it works you stick with it, if not you go back to being comedy. See reborn which started as comedy and ended up as battle. or samon the summoner that tried, failed, and went straight to comedy
Juan Evans
basically no matter how you approach it, it's sket dance lite purposeless school club manga), then a battle manga, then kumagawa comes in and it becomes a bunch of really really bad jokes for people that have shitty senses of humor like us
Jeremiah Myers
Except kumagawa doesnt really tell jokes as opposed to being a breath of fresh air as a villain, essentially rewriting all rules as to how to handle a villain in a battle manga. reason he gets praised its that among all characters in medaka box hes relateable to the point people identify with him, but noone could ever predict what the fuck he was gonna do next
Robert Baker
I didn't get how All Fiction worked
Ethan Mitchell
you delete something, and it will be as if it has never existed in this world from that point on. its not that hard user
Xavier Turner
Oh right. Thanks m8
I just remember Medaka's Box getting really convoluted near the end
Levi Anderson
>Isekai >MC starts with a power level of 8,000,000+ while the strongest being in the world caps at 1000
I fucking hate overpowered MC from the get go.
Hudson Campbell
it was a wild ride, but one im glad i took
the threads on Sup Forums were amazing
Blake Ross
So the story gets to reality distortion levels? I was finding it stupid at less than 10 year old girls swinging around 500lbs worth or metal ball and chains
And I'm fine with a story being crazy, but being setup for it is needed. I mean going from Class President wanting to help Everyone to Mysterious Class of naturally gifted kids being psycho killers, to people having reality distortion powers? That's sounds like BS even among the BS already like a terrible game of Jenga getting top-heavy.
Michael Lopez
it is really really hard to explain. but yes, it does get crazier, so if you dont like crazyness then you probably wont enjoy it. but i do urge you to go past chapter 55 as thats where the good kind of crazy really begins
Easton Rodriguez
Another potential deal-breaker I need to know is how insignificant do the secondary characters from the beginning arc become? I can already feel the swimming treasurer becoming pointless, and pretty much all the ones from the Kendo club or the Judo club being pointless among the guys who have the power of influence or whatever super-screw does.
Brandon Price
Nisio doesnt give a fuck about them. they will dissapear, then be relevant later, then dissapear, then be relevant. it goes up and down as the plot weaves them in and out
Christian Martinez
Was worried as such considering how many there were.
So with no time for funny does it also mean no time for romance? I liked how the two main characters weren't an item but seemed easily jealous if anyone else showed interest.
Adam Hill
No need to worry about that.
Joshua Richardson
...
Nicholas Richardson
It doesn't get good till best boy comes in
Aiden Turner
God tier fetishes, God tier antagonist
I miss Kumagawa
Brayden Reyes
I hate to burst your bubble but Medaka was never just a perfect girl. She was always described as being above others.
Asher Evans
Theres a lot of depth to that character you know. He's not just some one dimensional evil guy. He actually has a very strict sense of justice and he was in charge of a fairly heavy task too. You learn more about him later. He certainly isn't just some evil guy.
Jaxon Clark
Swimming girl becomes quite relevant later on and the head judo girl beats the unholy shit out of a super powered abnormal so she certainly gets plenty of time to shine too. They also all get epilogues at the end.
Jason Perry
Medaka Box is easily one of my favorite manga, especially to read with Sup Forums every week. I really enjoyed how it skyrockets after chapter 55.
Chase Bell
A pretty major part of Medaka box is that fact that Medaka is a monster. She is so far above everyone else that she is unable to ever relate to them. It's a major reoccurring plot point that is important to her character. She was never meant to just be a near perfect girl.
Asher Edwards
I almost wished we got a little more after Abnormal apart from the Kumagawa OVA, but it is what it is.
Kayden Gutierrez
they're just kids, let them play pretend
Jason Lee
The key to reading Medaka Box is to go in understanding that the whole thing is a straight-faced parody of Shonen manga. The series revolves around a protagonist so overpowered that she can't relate to other people, but still makes everyone love her by giving shallow friendship speeches. It gets way more blatant about the meta shit later.
The jarring, forced switch from a comedy manga to a battle manga was probably intentional.
Xavier Long
That does kinda make sense.
I just thought it was a good hook for the MarySue main protagonist trying stay humble always wanting to feel like an average joe with her success story being achievable for all.
Joseph White
why are kumagawafags so cancerous? holy shit
Blake Rivera
but he's the best
Ryan Green
The other girls can't even compete.
Jacob King
>stop liking what I don't like
Easton Jackson
fuckin watch yourself around these parts
Jacob King
I'm still a bit amazed that they actually typeset all these pages.
Jacob Barnes
I wish I could have been here to read Kumagawa Box with Sup Forums
Isaac Robinson
I don't get it. How did Kumagawa win against Medaka-chan?
Kevin Morales
There is no way Nisio didnt plan for most of the shit from the beggining, the guy is a meta fag.
Julian Flores
If so I hope he filled in the reasons why things made little sense. Like I read up to where the main girl's Brother is introduced. And in his description it says he is a former member of the 13. Which raised the question "why did her sister not know about the 13 if her own brother was in it? How long had this convoluted organization been around if they were just now surfacing and meeting this girl who's they should have scouted a decade ago?"
Angel Sanchez
Because Medaka strongly dislikes her brother due to the fact he wants to bang her and is obsessed weirdo. She hardly ever sees him and keeps her distance from him.
Cameron Lewis
Fair nuff
Isaiah Parker
Pink haired girl was the best, series didn't even know what it wanted to be until like 100 chapters in, whenever it went full meta.
William Diaz
So it just has a nice slow burn of 2/3 of the issues before it really picks up?
That's like the worst compliment to get.
Lucas Green
It's a trash man tbhq. It's fun for the best boy scenes though.
Christian Torres
I really liked that arc simply because you realize that zenkichi really is just an average person among a bunch of freaks
Colton Davis
>why did her sister not know about the 13 if her own brother was in it? They don't talk much, he's basically a highschool dropout.
> How long had this convoluted organization been around if they were just now surfacing and meeting this girl who's they should have scouted a decade ago?
She was scouted as soon as she entered, and the whole organization is still just high school teachers and students working together. The dramatic tone makes it sound otherwise, but the first 4 arcs are just high school students fucking around.
David Powell
Good Loser Kumagawa translations fucking when?
Jayden Torres
The first arc considers "fucking around" to be students packing sword claws and murdering kids with specially made bouncy balls for playing band music too loud, and trying to blow up the ever popular student counsel. I can only imagine what stupid shit that should be shut down instantly but is allowed cause why-not happens further.
Michael Reyes
Medaka Box is an example of a series saving itself from being axed by departing far from its premise to become a battle shounen.
With regard to your question, no it did not. It stayed as a battle-centric manga since. And you can tell the creators were not happy about it themselves. Nisio continued to drop thinly veiled satire criticising the manga industry. The resentment was palpable
James Rodriguez
To be fair it's the mix of absurdity and realism that makes it entertaining for me to read.
Some characters carry guns, yet nobody's actually ready to kill someone else, fights are often portrayed as brutal yet the stakes are often quite low. The characters' abilities are exagerated, and made to seem way more badass than they should be. To be fair you just get the feeling it's a bunch of high school kids role playing.
There are exceptions ofc, namely Kumagawa and Ajimu.
Matthew Brooks
So later it has parts that becomes the Sup Forums equivalent of when Indy writers shit all over cape comics cause of hate for capecomics having all the spotlight while a thousand Indy comics are left to die
If so I'd be game. At the very least I could push through shitty parts on the impression it was intentionally made to be shit for satire reasons.
