>A 15-year-old gained access to plans for intelligence operations in Afghanistan and Iran by pretending to be the head of the CIA to gain access to his computers, a court has heard.
>From the bedroom of the Leicestershire home he shared with his mother, Kane Gamble used “social engineering” – where a person builds up a picture of information and uses it manipulate others into handing over more – to access the personal and work accounts of some of America's most powerful spy chiefs .
>The teenager persuaded call handlers at an internet giant that he was John Brennan, the then director of the CIA, to gain access to his computers and an FBI helpdesk that he was Mark Giuliano, then the agency’s Deputy Director, to re-gain access to an intelligence database.
There is still some hope for Britain after all. If these agencies could get over their butthurt, they’d be wise to recruit him instead of punish him for embarrassing them

Part of me has to wonder if they fake this to make people think they're incompetent... Seems a little beyond belief that this kid just called the old NSA Help Desk and got a bunch of info no problem..

Our government is 100% stupid enough to let something like this happen so it's certainly plausible.
Chase Williams
this kid was probably bored and wanted to see how far he could take this. he definitely didn't just ring up NSA. Anyone who does this spends a bit of time on their targets. >watches tons of videos of the people he wants to impersonate. practice their accents, speech patterns, phrases they use. >find out everything about their life. pets, wife, kids, address, car, banks, cell provider, etc. Man I could keep going but this kid definitely spent some time researching his targets if he really did pull this off. I've watched plenty of defcon talks about this sort of thing, the info is out there to anyone. >Part of me has to wonder if they fake this to make people think they're incompetent... You'd be amazed how bad OPSEC is at most places. They drill it into these $15 hour tier one people that are in help desk, physical security, and receptionists that they have to abide by strict rules for granting access/password resets/giving information. All that shit goes out the window if you can pull off being someone just superior enough they don't know them in person but know who they are & you are pissed off and "in a rush". Checkout this video user. It's a fun watch about this dudes after hours gig of trying to break into offices/steal shit/get information. youtube.com/watch?v=JsVtHqICeKE

Wake up. This will be the excuse on the day of the rope. Read the details - they will muddle the lines on who was hacked vs harassed. It will make evidence suspect. Do you think we would have heard about this case otherwise???

If the CIA helpdesk is so retarded, do you think chinese, jews or russians havent used this infiltration angle to cause a lot more damage?
You should count your lucky stars that it was a teenager who exposed your shitty security, instead of some fucking turban who would actually have plans to leak and destroy shit.
I think intel services should welcome all attempts of skript kiddies trying to attack them, since they are least maliciious of all attackers, and other than a public embarrasment, you are going to suffer little else for exposing, and fixing a new vulnerability.

>If the CIA helpdesk is so retarded, do you think chinese, jews or russians havent used this infiltration angle to cause a lot more damage? Why bother when they can just get one of their agents hired on as a CIA employee. US OPSEC is pretty laughable in general which is why we leak like a sieve on everything from F-35 technical data, NSA program files, to documents for everyone had a security clearance background check.
Israel is the #1 enemy of mankind. Every other country is trying to undermine each other. Israel is trying to destroy civilization.

Absolutely mad lad! The guy who wrote Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy criticized the CIA and the MI6, he said their "business model" was unsustainable because too many people (more than 1 million in the US alone) have access to classified information. It's ridiculous, you can give so much power to so many people and expect an efficient work.
Jose James

A major problem for the US is first generation immigrants(or even second) aren't considered liabilities if they take trivial measures to "mitigate" the fact that they weren't even born here and have the majority of their extended family back in another country. This is just a symptom of the larger problem of the US as a nationless state occupied by consumers with no identity or loyalty beyond simple economics.
Bentley Brown
i think that hacking laws relay on claims to financial loss or breaking machines
Aiden Clark
Well that washes the act down to such retardation that accessing your friends facebook while he goes for a piss can be considered "hacking"

Most "spies" are foreign nationals that feed info to their handler who is actually employed by the spy agency who generally pose as diplomats and have diplomatic immunity in case they're discovered. If China kills a Chinese national for espionage it's not the US government's problem beyond losing an informant.
Tyler Parker
There is no difference between germans and turks.

>do you think chinese, jews or russians havent used this infiltration angle to cause a lot more damage? yes, they do this by walking into CIA headquarters and claiming to be a defector, then they feed us 20 years of useless lies we spend billions trying to figure out it was nothing
Colton Bell
Total utter shit. Iran, North Korea, etc., are afraid to kill us informants and spies. There is no way in hell China does it. At most they capture them, ridicule them and send them away.

Depends on the country. But there are also laws against accessing any „protected“ computers (or goverment computers) without authorization. However this is all highly legalistic and dubious in many cases. You can always say authorization is something you have per defition, if you are in the networt. So basically it’s about creating a legal fiction of authorization, where the some „legal entity“ most authorize you to be in the network and really want it that way (not only be tricked into really wanting). In the end the one with the monopoly of violence in a certain territory will in most cases decide his way (if it isn’t hacked too), so if there isn’t somebody else with a monopoly of violence in another territory protecting the „hacker“ the cards are stacked against him, if he is found out.
Oliver Edwards
not in this case. doing stuff like this amounts to what is called "computer theft", at least here in the united states. it doesn't mean that you physically stole something, but it is illegal access or use of a computer via electronic communication or means. unless he was selling whatever information he got a hold of, he wouldn't be charged with any financial or punitive losses.
Dominic Morales

there is no way China has any fears of doing anything to disrupt the US, they're very much in a solid position and it seems nobody will ever have a chance to catch up to the US
