Americans are completely brainwashed with loving authority as well. Talk badly about cops or the military, and their face turns red and they start spewing the typical pro-authority propaganda they've been brainwashed their entire lives. It's kind of ironic, the most adamant about their love for authority are the ones who claim to be the most independent. But even the more who seem neutral ones are still way more pro-authority than most of the civilized world due to the brainwashing.

I can run for any political office I choose, whenever I choose. Currently I could easily get a seat locally, and would have a shot at seat in the state. I don't have a college degree. I was a lousy student in high school, and a flunky(though not a stoner) in college. By all right and reason, I should be making about $37,000/yr max like the vast majority of Americans.
In 2017, I made $176,000. I live in an older house, which means I have side yards and a large back and front yard. I have a pool. An ok car too. No, not some expensive European car, but a nice Japanese made one that gets all the jobs done.
I am not kidding when I say that I am surrounded by poor people. The average American has NO idea that they are in fact poor. Yes, you do come across people like myself on occasion here. I and others worked hard, cracked down on ourselves and righted all the wrongs of life. But most Americans, hell, most Europeans even are not capable of that. As long as the lie of wealth is believable to them, they will still think that they somehow matter and suck up whatever lie an empathic politician tells them.
I used to be a liberal, thinking that old line of "we got to help the common man! Social heath care and free education!" Somewhere along the line, I woke up and saw the lie that was being pushed, and decided that it was better to screw others than be screwed. That's why I got $176k last year.
