Introduction to Anime

Hey Sup Forums, this is my first time visiting your board

As much as I like to consider myself interested and informed about the medium of visual art, at this point I'm afraid I have little no knowledge regarding japanese animation and honestly it seems really overwhelming to try and broaden my horizons due to how vast and ever expanding the world of anime is.

I was hoping you guys could lead me into the right direction regarding the essential series I should watch. I have so many other interests that I have to be really picky in regards to what I decide to spend my time on so for now I would like to limit myself to something like 5 or so shows that you guys deemed as the most appropriate for me.

As a kid I've watched Dragon Ball, Pokemon, Sailor Moon and Rorouni Kenshin. A few years ago I saw Cowboy Bebop and more recently I've seen and enjoyed a few Ghibli films.
Evangelion seems really well regarded so I'll probably start there but what else would you recommend? Stuff like cute girls in high school sounds very unappealing to me, I lean more towards fantasy universes, for instance I'm very fond of Avatar the last airbender(I know it's not anime). Ideally I would like things that arent based on a manga since rule of thumb is that the source material tends to be better but hey, if there's stuff you think would be important for me watch that fall outside of any of my preferences let me know.

If you want recommendations you should ask for dubbed anime. It doesn't really matter if you actually watch it like that or not.
The point is
1) Dubfags will give recommendations because they're retarded
2) Recommendation threads that aren't about dubs get deleted.

I guess I would've at least read your post, the OP was tl;dr since the first couple of sentences made it clear you just wanted to ask for recs. The answer would be the same though,
