We don't know how BB did it outside of speculation.

DFs contain a "devil" inside of them. When a person eats a DF, that "devil" then inhabits them. Makes sense that eating a DF user is one way of possessing said "devil".

This is pure speculation but BB probably used his darkness fruit to suck out and absorb WB's "devil". BB could accomplish this possibly because he has an "abnormal body type".
