It looks like this year I may have to go to Farmington Hills, Detroit this year, for personal reasons.
I have never been to the US, let alone Detroit. Though, I hear it is a bit dangerous to say the least?
So tell me Sup Forums, what pragmatic advice can you give me a brit, in going to the US, and Detroit? Which areas should I avoid? What things will offend the people there? Will I definitely get shot on my trip? Should I just stay in my hotel and where I have to be the entire time?

Farmington Hills is a good 10/15 miles from any truly worrisome ghetto. If you find yourself East of Telegraph avenue, lock your doors. You should be able to buy large spring loaded knives at most gas stations even out near Farmington, why not indulge in that strange luxury so you can have some insurance. Niggers will commute from the hood to Livonia at the furthest to break into houses or cars, but like I said, anything west of Telegraph/Inkster road is generally safe. Also, South of 8 mile of course too, though I find Telegraph to.be the most noticeable dividing line between true ghetto and suburbia.

Farmington Hills is nice bro. I'm there right now, the black people around here actually have jobs. Even downtown Detroit isn't bad around the sports arenas and restaurants. The only sketchy as fuck areas are the ghettos in actual Detroit, not metro detroit and unless you are really dumb you can tell which streets not to go down by the shuttered buildings and what not. Unless you are a place you don't belong Detroit is nowhere near as shitty as Chicago has become

Just use uber or lyft. Check out the Detroit Zoo, it's pretty fantastic even in the winter.

Canadian here. I've been to Detroit lots of times and have friends who commute there daily with Canada plates on their cars. Never had a problem. Problems arise after midnight around liquor stores.

can confirm. if you find yourself off the main roads and things start to look dark, you are encouraged to ignore normal traffic laws. in a lot of places the stop lights aren't even on and haven't been for years

I haven't been to Detroit, but I have been to Memphis - so the same rules apply, and I received shock, awe, and safety instructions from people in Knoxville and Nashville when I told them I would be traveling through Memphis and stopping in Memphis.
I was told to enter Memphis on a Sunday morning at 6 a.m., go to Graceland at 9 a.m., and be out of the city of Memphis by noontime on Sunday, and that I would escape problems.
I followed those instructions and I am still alive. Only time in my life I have seen hotels hide coin-operated Coke machines and vending machines inside locked caged rooms outside the hotel.

I live right next to Farmington Hills (Southfield) and it's a pretty good area desu. I wouldn't worry about getting shot unless you go south of 8 Mile which is way out of your way.

Take a trip north of the bridge and see the pictured rocks. The great lakes are also good for swimming.
As to your main point FH is a great place. The Southeastern region of your map is where you have to watch out for. Remember to stay north of 8 mile road and you're good

I live in the area. Farmington hills is between a wealthy part and the hood. If you want to go out Birmingham is the place to go. I try to stay out of Detroit city in general. I know people that had cars stolen or robed in the city but never killed. I think you'll be safe.

Hope you're flying Delta, KLM, Air France, or Virgin Atlantic. The terminal for the SkyTeam airlines in Detroit is MUCH nicer.

Oh, and if you're renting a car, just be aware that you have to get on a bus and then they drive you to your rental car company. It's not really "onsite".
Uber is alright, but why wouldn't you rent a car?
1) downtown, corktown and midtown Detroit are safe and surprisingly vibrant with good restaurants/bars/things to do. Anyone saying otherwise is either a pussy, lying or stupid
2) outside of those areas, I wouldn’t recommend anywhere else in the city proper, besides Belle Isle, mexicantown or west village
3) the Detroit metro area is FAR bigger than just the city proper
4) Ferndale, Royal Oak and even downtown Farmington have plenty of good food/entertainment options
5) Farmington Hills is about as suburban as it gets, nothing wrong with that though
if you fly out of detroit metro, be careful with tsa and the cops, they fuck with white people.
I flew in/out of DTW a ton in 2013 and never had an issue with security there, although I had TSA Precheck.

i fly to ohio via metro. i've been fucked with almost every time. once while waiting for a flight, 2 black cops were guarding the doors inside the security area that leads outside. i asked if i could go outside to have a cigarette and come back inside, and they said yes. when i tried to get back in, they said i had to clear security again. i barely caught my flight and had to be driven to the flightline to board. tsa has fucked with me every time.

Farmington Hills isn't Detroit. Its pretty nice. 8mile and farmington area is getting a bit ghetto but not bad. The lower the mile road the trashier it gets. Id stay north as possible. Stay away from west.bloomfiled (aka west jewfield) soo many jews. If you want a nicer area go to 23mile road, Shelby twp, sterling heights, Rochester Hills, Utica etc. Those are.nice and fairly white. Hopefully the arabs and.blacks stay away from there. Visit the zoo, henry ford, the science center, maybe a hockey game. Theres some nice brewerys around and lots.of bars and restaurants.
