The reason this and many other older anime seem more violent is because they actually fully illustrate organs, bones and other organic components of the body that spray everywhere when you kill someone.
A lot of modern anime seem to be made by people who have no idea how the human body works and so they just draw huge fountains of blood to convey gore.
This is why Higurashi and Elfen Lied will seem extremely tame when compared to Genocyber, Akira and practically any other 80s OVA.

Violence Jack: Hell's Wind, Violence Jack: Evil Town and Angel Cop all come to mind. I'm thinking specifically of the chainsaw murder in Violence Jack and the maggot torture in Angel Cop.

only the first OVA is any good desu. the second arc is a piss-poor ALIENS rip-off and the third arc is ruined by having zero budget. I'll grant that there's a great scene in every OVA though.

it's the same with live action flicks where instead of practical gore effects (which take a ton of time and skill to prepare/pull off) they now just add pathetic CGI blood spurts in post production.

The more important question is why isn't Koichi Ohata directing some more masterpieces of SF gore? He got stuck directing horrible big titty fighting anime for a couple years and now it seems he has retired. I want my M.D. GEIST 3 goddammmit! He even teased it on the commentary track. Crowdfund it if you can't convince the studios!
