Chariot du Nord was a famous witch known for her shows of magic. Among witches, she was known to abuse young children by stealing their magic purity.

Nonetheless she was willing to crush the hopes and dreams of countless children by stealing their magic to break this seal, crippling the next generation of already ailing magic users and driving the few left to desperate ends.
A process which dishonored every witch before her by turning magic into a stage-show mockery, a process which she even had the gall to merchandise for monetary gain.
And in the end, she failed. So many aspirations ruined for no reason whatsoever.
Therefore, she constantly and heartlessly manipulated one of the girls she scarred, who she doomed to alienation, mockery and ineptitude within the dying world of witches, into breaking the seal for her.
A girl that had devoted her entire life to being just like Chariot.

Most series try to give their villain some motive, but Chariot is simply irredeemable. Her character is the feeling of having stepped on shit, personified: A disgusting fuck-up.

Would have been nice if the show played this up instead of having Chariot take the blame like a fool

Remember that conversation about how she lost her magic as a child and was absolutely devastated by it? Chariot caused that.

She lost it after her mother died.
She lost her magic, but she worked until she got it back, which is what Akko has been doing without even realizing it. The moral is that you don't have to be a slave to circumstance, even when something fucks you up badly right out the gate.

I wish there were more interactions between all three of them together in the series because they really do look like they have good chemistry. Even in this episode, with Diana being the one to arrange the meeting between Akko and Andrew through her owl.

You can complain about Croix, but notice that Croix's plan, in her own words, merely relies upon harvesting excess negative emotion. She amplifies this innate hatred or anger to give herself fuel. In Chariot's case, she literally sucked the life out of little children to fuel her agenda.

Now tell me, who is more evil?

They said in a post-episode interview that Chariot literally sucked out some of Akko's intelligence when she stole her magic.That if anyone fought getting their magic pulled out of them it partially damaged their neurons in their prefrontal cortex. For an adult it would just be a headache the next day, but for a very young child whose brain was still forming it results in permanent brain damage. You notice Akko trying to grab onto the magic that is leaving her in the first episode, she instinctively fought to keep her magic even at six years old, fighting to keep it meant that Chariot damaged her brain when she yanked it out. Diana doesn't try to grab at the magic leaving her, thats why she kept her intelligence but lost her magic, and why she had to devote herself to an intense grueling rehab regiment as a child which eventually got her magic back but permanently changed her personality and left her with ptsd.

She literally made Akko partially retarded when she stole her magic.

She says her mom had a "condition" that made her die really early. Also Diana mom is nowhere to be seen on Chariot's show, meaning she died way before this. She also looks really young, almost a toddler, in the teddy bear flashback.

No magic stunted her growth. She'll be a late bloomer now that she's recovering.
