"Rival" would imply that he is going to or is supposed to fight Ippo at some point.

They both get angry as sin at each other and Sawamura is savagely beaten, rung out and hits his head on the judges table(I think), Mashiba gets disqualified. When Sawamura wakes up he goes for a joy ride and gets in a head on collision with a truck and has to retire.

Well at least he didn't die. That would've been too much.

The chapter ended with Sawamuras' helmet rolling to the curb, jesus I had my breath held because I was behind so I just hit the arrow key.

I never understood the hate for Miyata. I never saw him as the rival, but more of the symbol of grim realism that Hajime No Ippo often employs. Personally, I hope that Ippo puts him into a coma next time they fight.

The fight against this fucker gave me hope that Ippo would start fighting with more tactics and intelligence.

I abandoned any hope of that after the first 100 chapters.

All the pieces are in place for him to start taking his health seriously, his qtpie "girlfriend" starting to hesitate about involving herself with him, his mother not being able to watch his fights, his promise to quit when he loses. Main problem since this is the first fight after him coming back we haven't seen his attitude in the ring change yet

He'll probably get rocked hard and he'll have a flashback to his retirement promise. That's when Ippo will change.

A very emotional chapter 1500: Ippo finally realizes that getting punched in the face 100 times per fight is probably a bad idea and maybe he should actually hire a coach that can teach basic boxing defense techniques.

He's a pretty boring rival but Ippo is a pretty boring protagonist. All of the other side characters are better by far.

I don't know why the "rival" character is always compared to Vegeta, most of them aren't like him. Most shonen rivals, Miyata included, are brooding and aloof, whereas Vegeta is a loud, perpetually angry manlet. They're more like Piccolo if anything.

But Miyata is the one who fights like Ali.
