Not gonna lie, I kinda prefer the grimy, blocky artstyle of the 80s and 90s over what we have now.

Here to save Sup Forums

I just a few days ago discovered "Youtube anime", old, obscure OVAs and movies uploaded to Youtube. Really easy way to watch some stuff if you don't want to download it or do anything that takes effort to watch it, and Youtube will recommend you a bunch of other stuff.
Only seen three things so far.
Started by getting recommended Dragon Century from another source, and from there Youtube lead me to Dragon Knight and Tobira wo Akete, and then I started on Nayuta, but haven't finished it.
They are all really short, and I watched the first three in one evening. I think I'll keep using Youtube for finding these random, old anime.

Dragon Century was my favourite out of the three. The first episode was beautiful, the second episode wasn't quite as unique, but still pretty enjoyable. A solid 6/10, recommended.

Dragon Knight was shit. As usual you start watching it with hopes that it's okay, but it just got boring and very repetitive. Eventually the characters pointed out that it was repetitive, but that doesn't make it okay. And the plot was hard to follow, really just an excuse to show naked women tied up. 3/10, because it was too short for me to develop a real hate for it.

Tobira wo Akete is an isekai fantasy. Maybe one of the earliest, since it's from the mid 80s? Overall it was pretty boring, but it wasn't really bad or awful I think. The magic powers just switched between being a tacked on, pointless gimmick for the most part, while at one point becoming a deus ex machina. I guess it's watchable, but there are many better movies. I gave it a 4/10.

Only seen like 15 minutes of Nayuta, so can't tell much. But so far, it has at least managed to make me care a bit about the plot, but I hate how the main character is a thief. That's where I paused it. May finish it tonight, I guess.

Have you tried Angel's Egg? It's one of those experimental films and focuses on using the art to tell a story. It's directed by Mamoru Oshii as well.

I saw it last summer. It really got me to think about the use of getting the audience to fall asleep as an artistic way of storytelling.
Feel that it needs a rewatch though, since then I've seen some explanations of what it means, and it was pretty special and especially the music is great.

If you don't have anything planned for the night.
Also, don't read the description because of spoilers.

Thanks user.

Im going to be honest I think western animation was better in that era, shows like Brave Starr, He-Man, Masters of the Universe type stuff. Yet it was all kids stuff.

Now, I think Cowboy Bebop is really one of the few older adult animes that is on par, and it just happens to be a western.

Yeah I can see where you're coming from. Nowadays all "serious" Western animation is done with flash.

So finally got the see the uncut version of Violence Jack: Evil Town.
Holy shit, the climax part

BADBOYS is pretty good

youtube.com/watch?v=AlqAEKw9XMU

One of my favourites

Haven't watched it yet

Hard to believe it wasn't brought up until now.

Just finished Nayuta
Wow
Very beautiful.
The concepts of the beginning are really cool. Some tropes you know exist, but I had never seen it done unironically like this before. I mean, espers and aliens, with the aliens being camouflaged as humans and shooting with zappers. It felt so fresh, while also being so standard, in a way.
But then it changes a lot for most of the rest of the movie, and the story is told in this great, unique way. The pacing is weird, but not bad. It just skips ahead between different points where a lot happens in between, or it does not, but it doesn't matter. The pacing is just, I don't know, it's good, but it feels so weird at the same time. And the story kind of takes a back seat, while we just get beautiful visuals with a great feel and some good music, while giving all these strange visuals, and I just end up enjoying the beauty. Truly a beautiful anime. And unique. Just end up sitting there taking it in.

7/10, I don't think I've ever seen it talked about so WAY, WAY underwatched. Give it a try, it deserves way more attention than it gets.

best mod

I want something like BGC, but I suppose that I've seen everything similar: Megazone 23, GITS, Akira, Cyber City Oedo, Goku, stuff like that.

Riding bean
Gunsmith Cats
Madbull 34

any more like these?

Why watch old anime when it looks old?
Theres more new stuff you could ever watch with your limited time.

>Why watch old anime when it looks old?
Some people just prefer the old artstyle over the new, user.

have you seen angel cop? dirty pair flash?

>Im going to be honest I think western animation was better in that era,
Senpai you are nuts, have you watched He-Man recently? It's still shots of faces with lips barely moving, and the occasional running animation with repeated background. About half the animation is recycled from other episodes. Not saying that anime doesn't do this, but He-Man was garbage.

Outlaw Star was good

Probably my favorite 80s OVA, this one has it all:

youtube.com/watch?v=qfY6_eIr_Qo

probably because studios rarely make action/grindhouse stuff anymore. The most recent ones that come to mind are Aria the Scarlet Ammo, Highschool of the Dead, and Jormungand, all of which ended a long time ago. Do you have any recommendations for recent shows that focus on gunplay and over the top violence?

>angel cop
Nope.
>DPF
Neither. I liked Project Eden, Nolandia.
Is it good?

Now that I can't even create a new BakaBt account where can I get old animu? I wanted to watch Maison Ikkoku and streaming just won't do.

it's pretty and the music is good

same character designer as Legend of Galactic Heroes

New nyaa is probably the best non-baka tracker, most everything is still seeded. I haven't had any problems snatching older torrents from it.

Neither are very deep, but a fun watch nonetheless

Why bother cooking food when there's plenty of dirt on the ground to eat?

New shows have moderate amount of violence.
Probably because its cheaper to animate characters talking over action sequences.

Why read old books
watch old movies
play old games

if anyone made cool non-moeshit anime these days, I'd watch it. Until then you can pry my Bubblegum Crisis from my cold dead hands.

pantsu or .si?

Do most of you guys really prefer green jacket Lupin over red jacket? I'm having a hard time working my way through the first season and I'm finding most episodes to be just decent but not amazing

it was made in the fucking 80s bro

anime today is still ultra still shots with camera panning/cropping and dialogue shit. just look at the first episode of SOA, or an anime like Little witch academia where the characters are motionless for 15 seconds while the other character only moves their mouth for a dialogue

Fuck Dirty Pair Flash.

they're both scraping the same tracker, so whatever works for you

no shit retard-kun, I said anime is guilty too but He-Man and all that Filmation junk is appallingly bad. if you think that's better than Jap OVAs from the same time, you're trolling.

You're in for a treat. VHS quality is about all you'll get though.

>everything similar
No, but I'm not going to give you recs, great taste aside.

Its better than comparable childrens shows like Gundam

I watched both of the Vampire Hunter D films recently, they were fucking awesome. Sure the second one was made in 2000 but whatever, it's a shame this never caught on because I think the setting is really cool and I love stories about lone wanderers. Apparently there's a TV series in production but it's fucking CGI.

no one is talking about gundam, retard-kun. you said "western animation was better in that era", which is completely not the case.

youtube.com/watch?v=lyVqIkJ69VA

This OVA series is rather decent, nothing amazing but a still enjoyable.

Oh shit that looks fucking awesome

It had a great soundtrack, but really anything Artmic put out back in the day is great. Sahari's design was really well done too.

...

proved my point that was garbage

>calling Daicon IV garbage
Not even that user, but are you even trying with your bait?

lol this is a bonafide classic

it's Gainax

Hold up, this got a BD?

Yeah just a couple of years ago.

I miss Lina

I'm watching L-Gaim, and it has all of Tomino's craziness that I love. I think after this I'm going to go on a Tomino binge and finally watch all of 0079/Zeta/ZZ

I think it's hilarious how Tomino's fear of women and mommy issues pop up in his anime all the time.

Do any of you happen to have Ghost Sweeper Mikami (nyaa.si/view/637823) and could seed the last 0.42%? A few people are stalled on it, including me.

I finished the OVA series and wanted to get into watching the first season, but the only source I found only gave me 10 episodes. Anyone know where I could find the rest?

Violence Jack was pure kino

I finished Argento Soma just the other day. A pretty good show overall, but it felt like they revealed the big plot twist a little too soon.

Would recommend.

9anime.to my man

>Pop in Sailor Moon VHS tape I bought for $0.69
>We have to stop the Daruma Doll monster from ruining the festival!
>An Evil Taiko Drum Monster Is attacking the city!
>Openly gay Sailor Uranus & Neptune
>kimonos & shrine maidens everywhere

What was it even like for American Children to watch this on Cartoon Network in the 90's?

Just watched this recently, was a lot better than I expected.
Magnetic Rose was easily my favorite part (dat Kanno soundtrack) but Stink Bomb and Cannon Fodder were cool too.

legendary dub
youtube.com/watch?v=Ipr-wS5iBv0

Much appreciated

Mezzo Forte.

It's a hentai, but it stands on it's own as a good action flick.

Stink Bomb also has a pretty great OST.

90s English dubs are hilarious now

It sucked at the time because that's all you could get in many cases

DANGEROUS

MOST DANGEROUS

>any more like these?
I'm sure you could find something through anidb, instead of using Sup Forums as your personal search engine.

Does Sup Forums still like Giant Robo?

I can't fucking stand Imagawa in hour long episodes. I thought it was pretty dull.

>streaming
What the fuck? Kill yourself.

I'm probably the only guy here who has liked Master Keaton.

The Dubs were also like 10-15 bucks(Dubbed VHS would retail for like $25 for 2-3 episodes) cheaper than the Sub VHS(Subbed VHS's would usually go for $35 for the same content as the dubbed). This was also in 90's money, and in that era, even if you had the money... you sometimes couldn't find the VHS's without ordering it mail-order or waiting for the suncoast/fye/sam goody to special order the VHS.

I just watched the Chibi Maruko-chan movie My Favorite Song that was subbed recently. The music video like parts were really beautiful and the animators probably had a lot of fun with them.

Just finished up Angel Cop.Pretty mediocre, but then again I could only find the politically correct version without the Jewish conspiracy plot.
I really enjoy the old art style. I also enjoy mecha and over the top violence, both of which are abundant in pre-2000s anime. By your logic, reading old books, watching old films, or listening to old music is pointless too.

I watched the sub that had the Jewish conspiracy plot in tact a couple months back
it was still mediocre aside from the action scenes

Do you have a link? Normally I wouldn't ask, but I've only been able t find the censored version and I don't feel like downloading every available torrent and sifting through all of them

>I like over the top violence
>calling Angel Cop mediocre
I can't wait to hear your appraisal of Ohata's works. What's wrong with you?

I actually loved Genocyber and enjoyed MD Geist. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Angel Cop's violent scenes, but as a whole I just did't enjoy it that much

The art and animation were fantastic, but I hated the story. Something about how it tried to glamorize sacrificing yourself for an "honorable death" in combat really pissed me off.
I'm usually not much of a moralist when it comes to fiction, but seeing characters willingly go to their death for a stupid or poorly-explained reason pushes my buttons. One or two cases of it I can handle, but the entire second half of the show felt like they were introducing characters one after the other just so they could sacrifice themselves.

It's on my backlog. Someone recommended it in an old pre-2000s thread, and this webm caught my attention.
Is it as good as it looks?

>Something about how it tried to glamorize sacrificing yourself for an "honorable death" in combat really pissed me off.
Yeah but that's Japan for you, back when there was still a national sense of honor.

Keaton is pretty good, it's well written. I think the manga is better but the show is good too. It's by the same dude who made Monster and 20th Century Boys.

Compiler,
what the fuck was that do i need to read the source material to know what th hell the OVA is all about? i can guess by context but it explains very little
(0's dubs arent even that bad
its not hentai, its action anime with a tasteful amount of hentai
while technically 2000+ mezzo forte and mezzo DSA are p sick, same with KITE
but KITE liberator what the fuck was that the ending was hilarious

Jerky ass gif just doesn't do that scene credit.

neat

As much as I like the 80s-90s artstyle, even I can't help but admit that there are some fucking weird frames sometimes. I mean, she looks like a middle aged guy for the first 2 seconds.

I remember watching that with some of you anons last halloween

>cgi
Please don't be like berserk

Sorry to take a piss on your rainy day, but it probably, most definitely will.

80-90's OVA's are the peak of the anime medium
