Actually studies have shown that group pressure is a very effective motivator if there is a way for the group to punish induviduals within it. Considering how students are a social group, then definetely lowering the grades of the class would be met with social ostrication. Therefore, I would expect in a situation like that for the grades of everyone in class to rise conciderably, and also for the group spirit to improve, as it will be in the interest of students to help each other. I would be interested in a study testing this, but I believe they already did it in a facism simulation in a U.S. college, which showed fantastic results.
