what will the basis for early martian society be? It's hard to imagine anything other than communism, right? Perhaps a militaristic society, with ranks and a complex hierarchy.

There will never be a martian society.

Fucking spot on.

Colonising Mars is dumb as fuck.

you are really stupid

you are much less stupid than that other guy

>Martians
>White

Ceres makes much more sense for colonization.

Lower gravity means easier landing/construction.

SOME gravity means easier working conditions than a small asteroid or Phobos / Diemos.

Ceres is thought to have a tremendous amount of fresh water ice beneath the surface. There is at least the possibility that a Ceres colony could be entirely self sufficient. Such a thing would be vastly harder on Mars.

its going to be capitalist (obviously lol)
with similar laws to america

>a compound of very dedicated libertarians

I would consider that a possible answer to the question. After all, there is no lower limit on what constitutes 'society'. A few hundred researchers and rich idiots still need a way to govern themselves on a day to day basis.

>being this retarded

...

>implying Americans do anything based on how practical it is
The Martians will be 56% within two generations

Your country doesn't have the resources. China will get there first, and it will never be colonised.

It would start out very fascist, eventually giving way to a democratic mixed-economy.

m8 space X is launching their colonial rocket in like 7 years

this.

at first I was inclined to agree with this but then I remembered that Phoenix Arizona exists and now I'm not so sure it still stands up.

In the Expanse series, Martian Congressional Republic is a breakaway colony in conflict with the United Nations government on Earth. Mars turned into a high tech militaristic aristocracy, while Earth is a decaying socialist welfare state.

I would obviously be anarchist.

>doesn't have the resources
kek
>China will get there first
They can barely get a space station up, be serious lad
Ruskies are the only ones that stand a chance at beating us, and it doesn't seem like they're even bothering to try.

This is the plan.

>It's hard to imagine anything other than communism, right?

Why aren't there any multiplayer games based on communist ideals?

Wouldn't it be easy to achieve in a virtual world?

Current mars bases are military structure

highly technical

There is no incentive to colonize Antarctica because it doesn't offer anything more than any of the other continents on earth, and it's a lot harder.

Mars (and space in general) offers tremendous advantages, not the least of which is the technological advancement that would come from colonizing it. You don't need any significant leap in technology to colonize Antarctica, you just need a big fucking oil burner to heat your shit.
To colonize Mars you need to develop all sorts of technology that will help you colonize elsewhere in the solar system as well.
Plus, it's fucking space. This is what humanity is meant to do. It's our manifest destiny.

The question to ask is why colonize a planet when you can make orbital colonies that are way cheaper and that have 1g gravity, and that fit the same amount of people and don't require a lot of fuel to take off?

Ore? Asteroids.
Energy? Dyson swarm.

Every time you are reminded about meteors or Aliens from now until the upcoming indictment openings, I want you to remember that John Podesta is a blood sucking pedophile and that he along with Obama, Hillary & Co. and the rest of the establishment will fake these events ala Project Bluebeam to get away from justice.

>Why aren't there any multiplayer games based on communist ideals?

A few years ago I used to play Wurm online, I was part of a village and shit.
Everyone helped each other out and resources were redistributed equally among all members.
Eventually though people started getting assmad that guys who didn't put in any effort got the same stuff as the guys who did, some people weren't paying for the deed upkeep, etc.
Drama ensued, and eventually the village started forcibly removing anyone who didn't pay their share of the upkeep, based on land occupied, which meant everyone started walling in their shit since they were paying for it.

Only close friends helped each other for nothing in return, and for everyone else it was always a trade. I'll mine some high ql iron for you with my mad mining skillz but you'll give me a decent set of armor, etc.
Some people didn't want to pay the deed upkeep so they moved out of the village, but still maintaned trade relations.

>tl;dr: our little communist heaven turned into ancap paradise in less than 2 months.

Don't worry about the stragglers.
They'll stay in cryptosleep on Earth waiting for the sun to swallow them

>game based on not dying of starvation
>communism

hearty keks

>orbital colonies that are way cheaper

Not with the current state of technology.
They'd be cheaper if we had mining and manufacturing facilities on the moon, but we don't.

kek

(((ten years away)))

the rustbelt and health crisis proves you don't have the ability

we would still need to mine for stuff. Orbital colonies would be cool though

((()))) ?
Space X is a private company lol
((((NASA))))) are the ones who have stagnated

>colonizing the new world is dumb
>already a civilization there
>who the fuck knows how to survive in those trees and shit
>tor-fucking-nados?
we will NEVER colonize the "new world" when were not even using all of ireland and scotland... let alone pushing into the middle east, where we dont have to cross a fucking ocean.

MARS AETERNUM!

/thread

>rustbelt
steel and Ford trucks don't go into space
>health crisis
fatties with diabetes don't go into space

SpaceX just test-fired our new most powerful rocket in the world, Falcon Heavy (previous was our Delta IV)
Then NASA will be testing a new-new most powerful rocket in the world in a year or two, Space Launch System
We will drown the world in American-refined hypergolic fuels and you can do nothing to stop it, Xi Jinping

> technological advancement that would come from colonizing it.
You get technological advancement from investing in ANYTHING. Just increase science funding. There's nothing special about going to mars. It's not even technologically that difficult. We know how to build rockets and stuff already. No fundamental new technologies need to happen. It's just very very expensive.

>It's just very very expensive
>Just increase science funding

>let the butthurt hit the floor
>let the butthurt hit the floor
>let the butthurt hit the floor
>let the butthurt hit the....

>FLOOOORRRRRRRRR

Fpbp.
Any space colonies will just be run like a company, not some sci fi shit

>communism
>militaristic
>complex hierarchy
Not likely on any of those counts. If you stop reading science fiction for a minute and instead look at who is actually trying to get to Mars it becomes clear that the first settlements are going to be corporate, small and flat populations and working toward the common goals of exploration and resource extraction for money.

inb4 astronaut Dave gets shot out of the airlock because diversonaut Stacy complained to HR

let me debunk you
there will always be rich faggots who will try to find another way to spend/earn moneyy
introducing to you

MARS RESORT
ONLY FOR THE RICH RICH CHOSEN PEOPLE

That works if this is the Sims or some shit where you can just force people to spread out. Instead we have fucking New york city & LA crowded as fuck and NO ONE willing to move to nebraska. You can find some deluded snobby fucks who are willing to fuck off the planet, but good luck convincing anyone to willingly move to Nebraska

>it's cold
We gonna build space elevators n sheeeit.
Railguns that can shoot cannisters of greenhouse gases, machines to take the co2 and turn the carbon into diamonds and let the oxygen into the atmosphere.

the mayority of people who will go to mars will share common bounds ,and need for trust each other ,so all rich and smart will problably trust each other enought to establish participative democracy

>resource extraction for money

lmao whats going to drive this martian economy? trade between settlements? each one would be self-contained by necessity. The idea of extracting resources on mars for profit is an extremely sci-fi notion.

>the idea of American companies extracting resources in Africa is an extremely fictional notion

Self-sustaining meritocratic technocracy.

Don't forget SpaceX has also done hundreds of test fires on their new methalox Raptor engine, which will drive the next generation Dragon as well as the BFR.
In 5 years Musk time (so probably 10) we could witness a new-new-new most powerful rocket, and this one will put the Saturn V to shame with a performance of 150tons to LEO in fully reusable configuration.

Also RocketLab successfully reached orbit with their new tiny electric pump driven rocket, which opens up a whole new market for cheap small satellites.
Like you said, Nasa has plans for the Moon and Mars again.
ESA is talking about starting research into habitats.
New Glenn is not be that far off from its first launch, projected for 2020.

Musk is the best thing that could have happened to mankind. He single-handedly restarted the space race.

can someone tell me which game / tv show / movie is this screenshot from? I hope its from some movie that i havent seen yet, because i fucking love Mars themed stuff

It's just a SpaceX concept art sadly. The rockets are BFRs.
I'd love a Rimworld-type movie/tv series

because africa has cheap labour, air you can mostly breath, shipping costs a few cent per kg, oh and you know, Africa is on the same planet.

>Africa is on the same planet.
That's part of the problem, senpai.

And apparently Russia's playing with nuclear engines on the downlow.
The next couple decades are gonna be fucking sweet provided no SHTF

...

Getting humans settled on another planet is going to be a close race against the yellowstone supervolcano

>terraforming technology will never exist ever

pls stop

>It's hard to imagine anything other than communism, right?
Why is that fucktard?

What the hell? How did I not hear of this!?
This is great. NTRs really have a massive potential if we can get them done properly.
Sadly I think nobody outside of Russia would ever be able to get the public approval to launch them, and I'm not sure they have the budget to do it themselves.

fucking checked, this gave me a space elevator in my pants.

Hey, wanna buy some shit from my Asteroid-Mart?
>Nah I'd rather order it from Earth and wait half a year for it to get here

What about the EM engine? I remember that nasa published a paper saying that they got the engine to work.

Well, since they can never leave, it will resemble a penal colony, a prison, like Alcatraz, or Australia.

If you thought Australia shitposters were bad...

It will be off limits to civvies.

because small self-contained communities living in total isolation are generally communistic by nature, as far as I know. what makes you say otherwise?

Tribal. Communism only works in a post-scarcity society.

The Campi Flegrei supervolcano here in Italy has also been raised to yellow alert recently, apparently it's undergoing increased magma activity and nobody is sure why or what it means.

If that bad boy blows we're all fucked.

I'd imagine it would have to be heavily guarded to prevent a lone kook from opening an airlock and killing the entire colony. All it takes is one turd in the punch bowl to make the whole thing undrinkable.

Fuck you niggers, always stealing my ideas and cutting me out.
Going to plasma cannon your asses from the moon, swear on me mum.

Figuring out how to get back to earth before turn into a different speciies due to gravity. Also, figuring out how to not die from all the fucking radiation from a lacking magnetic field.

Elon Musk is a dumb cunt.

>whites only allowed

thanks man.

I'd love if someone finally made Red Mars series, but for like 10th time in last 20 years it got put on hold. Fuck this gay humanity, cant even make a single tv show about colonizing and terraforming Mars

You know how greenhouse gasses are causing the world to heat up? We do that but on mars.

How are you going to seed the water?

In a healthy civilization, space exploration and colonization is absolutely necessary because the first goal of a civilization is the perpetual existence of it's people. That requires (1) spreading the civilization across multiple places and (2) mastering the universe in ways we can't even imagine today.

Space colonization is pointless till we can finally use the orion project

mars will be a white conservative utopia.
at least for many years until the whites build enough infrastructure for everyone else to come and leech off.

life will be difficult and dangerous, drains on society such as criminals and druggies will be removed ASAP (thrown into the vaccum of space).

Killing every human.

won't work, Mars has a near non existent magnetic field so any atmosphere will just splutter off into space due to the solar wind. That's what happened to most of the water on mars

Mars already has a shitload of water ice under the surface, and in its polar ice caps.
This shit has all been solved a long time ago.

The new problem we're facing is that apparently there's a very very high concentration of perchlorates in the soil, and that's real bad news for life.
Perchlorates are extremely powerful oxidizers and they'll pretty much bleach anything to death.
There are SOME bacteria that can break them down, but it would be a slow process and we don't know how feasible it is.

SPBP

Lol no one will ever go to America first of all Scotland is empty second of all being on a boat fucking sucks nerd bitch lol why didn’t you think of that? also fighting Indians who stink is shit and it’s basically fucking retarded to cross the sea when there’s plenty of water here in my bathtub in England dumbass

>soil will automatically bleach crops

Ok so we know for a start that there will be no Irish people on mars.

*torches your base*

>Colonize mars.
>Cant even colonize the south pole.
If it happens before we colonize the moon I'll eat my own dick.

>lmao whats going to drive this martian economy? trade between settlements? each one would be self-contained by necessity. The idea of extracting resources on mars for profit is an extremely sci-fi notion.
Triangle trade with Earth's Moon, LEO/Lagrange stations and later the Main Belt. Mars has tons of accessible CO2 and water and methane could be made with it. Data might be important, especially if there's some extant life there. Intersettlement trade is of course possible, too, but would be much smaller than trading with distant ports.
Self-contained, perfectly sustainable colonies are a myth. Almost all colonies are trade-based.
Profit is the single greatest motive humans have for anything. Fact.

>mars
>colony

JELLO BABIES!!!
JELLO BABIES!!!

It's amazing how so many people have such minimal understanding of timescales.

SOYBOYS WHO THINKS STAR WARS IS REAL LIFE BTFO'D

>but it would be a slow process and we don't know how feasible it is.
If it wasn't getting full UV, it probably wouldn't be so bad, radiation is causing the growth, right? If you used bacteria, you'd have to worry about its waste products (which may end up being a benefit to creating the atmosphere)

This. It's easier to colonize any location on Earth than Mars. It would be easier to colonize the bottom of the ocean, the Sahara Desert, even the highest point or lowest point on Earth, it would be easier to colonize the top of Mt. Everest than Mars.

And even if a "planetary killer" ever strikes Earth and decimates humans and plants and animals, it would still be easier to survive on Earth than on Mars.

And even if a nuclear war breaks out on Earth, it would probably still be easier to live inside a bunker inside a mountain on Earth, than on Mars.

There are treaties against resource exploitation at the south pole. You're probably right though that the moon/low earth orbit will probably be first to be seriously colonized.

We're not doing this because it's easy, but because it's hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win.

:^)

Honestly it’s unlikly going to be a big society, the biggest reason is why would anyone live on mars? I get if you are a scientist, you can conduct experiement on Martian soil and minerals, but for the average person it’s probably going to be a shitty place to live.

A big challenge to comfortable Martian life comes from the fact that mars cannot be terraformed, lacking a magnetic field, it’s impossible for mars to hold on to an atomepshere.
