I never watched nge before and I don't intend to but I too think that she's the hottest girl in the show.

She only really exists in a single movie, in which we learn nothing much about her. What we do learn is interesting, but it was pretty much bait by Ano so he could crush the souls of the anime fans he detests so much with the third movie.

Because we got confirmation that she was added to the films on a whim and is basically written out of the plot due to lack of time. Anno didn't have any plans for her to begin with and now that they are struggling to have an ending in one film, she is no longer relevant.

She was hype when she was wearing that. She was doing plot related to the changes from NGE, like why Nerv was private and an unSeele UN had their own Eva agency. She became an accessory when she joined the central plot, just kinda shoved in there taking over parts from other characters without changing anything, and then nothing she was doing before matters or can ever go anywhere. She's like the protagonist of the kind of spinoffs they should have been making.

I like how she dons and molests Asuka.

Given how they mischaracterize the characters to make them enough 'waifu material' I don't think 'care' is the exact word.

This, they rewrite the characters to suit their desires, then have the audacity to shit on Rebuild for the changes it made to those characters. Anno may well be a hypocritical otaku, but he's still right about the fans.

But literally the reason people still go for Asuka/Rei in the Rebuilds is due to them projecting their old characters in the new movies. They're nothing alike.

Asukafags and Reifags get triggered whenever you mention that she's unironically better than both.

She does have a character. She's clownish out loud and notes things to herself in a more serious tone, sorta animalistic, has a lot of empathy for the rage monsters evangelions are underneath. She doesn't have a story or any relevance.

Mari would be more popular if she had been in the original series.

I'm not sure if she was going to be important in the movies but had her role reduced because fans disliked her or if her time to shine hasn't come yet.

Her characterization is pretty weak, both because she is a movie-only character and because she is a fan service fucktoy insert. She doesn't really have any inner conflict either, she just pilots EVAs for fun basically. Her past is rather blank as well and offers no characterization either. She barely interacts with any other character outside of battle. She is rather boring compared to all of the mental fuck-ups in the cast.

She has potential as a character, but it is not realized in any shape or form. And it is questionable whether she will become more interesting in the last movie.
