I'm not exactly sure how the testing webpages decide that a genetic marker is "German" or "Italian", but we can assume that what is having them define it as such and such is that the specific genetic marker is most frequent in those geographic populations.

Patrilineal continuity in Ireland for 4000 years is a tough challenge because the modern people that live there are largely Q Kelt derived, a group of Kelts that split off from the rest (named P Kelts) shortly before Rome was founded.

There is overlap because the people that went to Ireland left behind genes in Germany and especially Britain (mostly Scotland, that's the route the Q Kelts took to Ireland through the north).

The fact that another population shares your genes doesn't make you part of that other population, the person passing the judgement just thinks so because the markers are associated with that geographic region. There are only so many ways of coding for proteins, which is why that dumbass "52% banana" meme exists.

DNA takes everything around it, and tries to make it more DNA or serve the DNA. But it doesn't do it consciously, it's the true natural selection, it's not about individuals, it's not about species, it's about DNA, DNA fights DNA.

If most of your DNA is European, then you have excellent exogamy which gives you very tame features, whereas, if you have a mixed with people who practice endogamy, they have more aggressive and pronounced features and you'll look asymmetric in regards to the golden ratios of aesthetics.

Ok, h-here goes. I took the 23andMe genetic test a while back. Turns out that a pretty big chunk of my DNA came from... Finland of all places. Literally the largest chunk that couldn't be considered Slavic is Finnish.

The rest of it I can understand, Sarmatians and all that. But Finland? How come? I know my family tree more or less, going back a few generations, but I do not recall any grand love stories between a Pole and a Finn being passed on in the family. Always considered myself 100% Polish, both culturally and ethnically.

I can even understand the ever so slight, fraction of a percent Asian trait (Genghis Khan is coming to rape and pillage, hide your wives yo), but this really gets my noggin joggin'.

To add to that... The 1% Ashkenazi thing. Apparently almost everyone from Europe that took the test gets it, is that really the case? As far as I know, there were no Jews in the family either.

I wouldn't mind, if anything I'd take that free trip to Israel (kek'd), I'm just wondering whether it actually holds true. Weirder still, I actually look pretty Jewish (man I could smoke a cigarette while taking a shower and my nose would protect it from ever getting wet) and various people have asked me whether I'm a Jew at different points of my life. So what's the deal here? Would 1% be enough to actually affect the way you look?

What else... Apparently I'm way more Neanderthal than the majority of people that took the test. I don't get sick gains though. The only supposed trait I can think about it a large tolerance to pain, but other than that I get moved by arts etc. and wouldn't really consider myself a "caveman" by any means. I googled that haplogroup and what I found has people talking about Kelts. I don't understand your bickering about haplogroups anyway, it's not the definitive way to population genomics.

The Y chromosome seems to "unlock" a lot of stuff, like a bigger and better brain with more IQs, but also more cancer risks.

Of course different Y chromosomes vary by what effects they'll have.

I don't know what "Finnish" means for you though, there are the "Helsinki Finns" (essentially Europeans) and something else that starts with a K, referring to the Saami-hybrids.

Poland is populated by the East Baltic race to a degree, modern Finnish stock has been formed by that racial group as well, so that could explain the overlap.

I know that the main function of the Y-chromosome is to act as a carrier for the SRY gene, but what other genes does it carry if any? It's btw quite interesting how the Y-chromosome is a palindrome.

I think only 50 or so genes are on the Y chromosome. It appears to be the absence of the second X chromosome coupled with testosterone that results in men, the male body is a malformed female essentially, which is why men with high estrogen revert to the default human state: female. They grow tits and think emotionally.

A little rude towards my fellow countryman but ok ... afaik your statement was that autosomal is misleading when for example paternal lineage shows direct descent of, let's say, Indoeuropeans (would be the case with R haplogroup). The thing with autosomal DNA in general is ... how to you classify it? Saying you are 30% German and 50% Finngolian or something is inaccurate in my opinion if you compare it to contemporary DNA data. You see, if you go back far enough in time, towards the Neolithic, you will see the genetic 'fingerprints' of several distinct populations which did genetically diverge quite a bit (partly responsible for this is glacification and mass death of those early humans, creating genetic bottlenecks). Now these ancient groups would be roughly as follows: Western (and generally Eurasian) hunter-gatherers descending from Cro-Magnons, Near Easterners who became the first farmers and spread all over Europe after the last Ice Age as well as the proto-Yamnaya who themselves were a mixture of Caucasian hunter-gatherer and the so-called Ancient North Eurasians, Siberian big game hunters who later also contributed to the genetics of Native Americans. Now generally, asides from the patrilinear dominance of Y-haplogroup R in Europe, we Europeans are a mix of these three groups, at different ratios depending on country (Western hunter-gatherer more prevalent in the West, Yamnaya ancestry more prevalent in the North and among Slavs while Near Eastern farmer is found more in Southern Europe). The dominance of Y-haplogroup R most likely stems from a progressive invasion of male Indoeuropean warbands into Europe, which was then populated by Near Eastern farmers mixed with some remnants of the old hunter-gatherers. You see, male lineage of Yamnaya is dominant and follows a gradient which resembles their invasion pattern (besides the mass graves of slaughtered farmers that pop up every once in a while). The thing is ... the female lineage is different.

The female lineage of Europe, the mitochondrial DNA, looks like a patchwork ... an ancient patchwork which matches more the distribution of old hunter-gatherer clades paired with the slowly encroaching Near Eastern farmers. Remember the mass graves I have mentioned? They curiously lack in female remains. Our Indoeuropean ancestors where mostly male warbands ... so they slaughtered and subjugated the male population and kept the females mostly for their harems. This is how Y-haplo R became so dominant in Europe. Still, autosomal DNA does not care about male lineage and the original female European population mixed with the invaders, leaving their genetic signature within us. Funnily, we are all mutts ... but it does not matter. At least as far as I understand it our Yamnaya ancestors were rather high in Neanderthal ancestry (most likely from the Siberians, they sure had retained many Neanderthal hunter-gatherer adaptions in this harsh environment).

Think among archeologists it is still a little bit controversial if this was farmer-on-farmer warfare or due to Kurgan invasion ... but I do favor the latter.

R1b and other R variants may be found earlier than the steppe invasions but that does not surprise that much as the hunter-gatherer societies of that time period were rather mobile and genetically not that far away from each other. But due to founder's effects or bottlenecks (think it is not totally clear yet why) R variants became prevalent in the proto-Indoeuropeans. But they have existed before in older hunter-gatherer societies. May also be that small invasion waves from the steppe happened earlier than the large scale migrations, not sure about that. Would have to dig more into the most recent archeology again.

It is possible though, that R1B's Ice Age refugium was in the Mediterranean and even the Sahara. And their presence in Yamnaya came from the south rather than the East? This would explain R1B V88 branching off to Sub Saharan Africa?
