On September 29, 1938, an agreement was signed between Hitler and Great Britain's Neville Chamberlain which called for peaceful revision of the wrongs committed by the Treaty of Versailles. A four power conference was planned which would preserve peace. Four powers was Great Britain, Germany, France and Italy.
An ambassador for the Munich Agreement, Mr Oswald Pirow was sent to Germany to ease the tension on the jewish question. Neville Chamberlain told Pirow that pressure of international Jewry was one of the principal obstacles to the Munich Agreement and it would greatly hep him resists that pressure if Hitler could be induced to moderate his policy toward the Jews. Pirow states that Hitler viewed this idea with favour and an Anglo-German agreement was in sight.

Sure, the SA were thugs who had a use when going against other thugs such as the Communists. After the NSDAP came to power however they were not really needed anymore. Not to mention their massive membership (3 million) dwarfed the SS (only a few thousand) and even the Army (500,000).
Generals had made it clear that they would not support Hitler if he did not either reign in or get rid of the SA. The SA politically was also more left wing than Hitler was, demanding an end to all Capitalism and a redistribution of wealth.
The SA was also pretty degenerate, they frequently would go out get drunk or high off of drugs (amphetamines were popular) and start fights with police, civilians and sometimes even each other in huge riots. Homosexuality was also rife within the SA, although it's debatable to what level Hitler didn't like this (though Himmler and the SS hated it).
So really it was Hitler cleaning house, he needed the Conservatives and Army onside who would not support the Socialist rhetoric Rohm and the Strassers proclaimed.
