You misinterpreted OP user, Shin was an incredible movie, true Anno went nuts with the loctation/character descriptions, and Godzilla was a bit pokemony in terms of the evolutions, but it was an excellent experience.
Only problem is that he kind of painted himself into a corner with the ending.
Watching an American movie audience going from being hyped to see Godzilla start using atomic breath to horrified silence is an amazing sight.

Not that user, but there's two issues with it. There's the way they defeat him, and the big reveal at the end.
Without spoiling anything, the way they stop him is incredibly lame, and disappointing. While the end reveal is gonna make where they go with this incarnation completely uncharted territory if Anno actually comes back for another go after Eva Rebuild is done.
Huh, I think that the film is pretty self contained and there's no need for a sequel at all.
I took the Godzilla people at the end as a way to show how close we were to getting fucked, same as Fukushima, we got lucky that things didn't get any worse.
