'Ai ai Gasa' or Love-Love Umbrella.
Not as definite as the 'red string of fate' but still symbolizes romance in Japanese culture.
Theres also the 'first person you meet' and the 'walk in on them changing' tropes that the two have thats also seen in other anime.
For me, its how Mayumi is shown thinking and doing things for Tatsuya while not in his company that does it for me. Also small bits in the anime like their dance bit while Miyuki watches, her sigh of reliefe when Tatsuya beat Masaki and poking her tounge at tatsuya in his Mobile suit help, since there is no reason to add any of those things in unless it was to suggest a higher purpose. both books and anime can literally go on without those parts and nothing else would change.
So for me, its the small bits so that later, if anything did happen, the author is all "the hints where all over the place, you just had to find them" to anyone who complains that it 'came out of nowhere'.
Even Honoka dosn't anything like that, and her whole character is built on her obsession with Tatsuya.
