I've never watched it. What little I've gleaned of it the series seems very absurdist which isn't really my kind of thing.

I didn't think it was funny, at all. Its almost kind of embarrassing to see so much effort go into a joke and it just falling flat.
The small, non-exaggerated SoL moments kept me watching though.

It has its moment but i found it boring overall.
The animation and the art are really good.
But besides the "suplexing deer" or "hallway chase" moments didn't catch my attention.
I'd rather watch Yondemasuyo azazel-san if i wanted to watch silly shit.

I think the hate for gundam Seed has more to do with the second half of the show and then the backlash over the sequel.

It's one of the five best anime of the decade.

Its popular in Japan and the manga has been a best seller.

I recall that the manga got 8th place in a major "best manga of the decade (?)" contest that even surprised the mangaka. It's Kyoani's greatest masterpiece with a lot of depth in its absurdity and witty comedy. It definitely is known across the net, but unfortunately it does not have a huge cultural impact outside of Japan.

If anything, its merch is always high-priced in the aftermarket, with the Nano and Hakase nendos going for over 10K yen each.
