Why is Hibiki so popular?

They definitely made mistakes pre-production. I would guess that would be part of the reason behind all of the delays. I assume there were two camps (drama vs sol) that could not get along and maybe even actively sabotaged each other.

When they finally delivered the product, the drama side probably was given an ok based on the promise,"if it works by the end of episode 3 you win". So they stumbled through and had trouble balancing the serious aspects with historical nods and light sol moments, failing to produce an interesting world or characters with strong motivation.

By ep 3 the train was wreaked but at least ep 4 was entertaining by contrasting lighthearted Kongou elements with Mutsuki sulking on the peir.

So the moe team took over but without much material or preparation they just stretched out a single joke to episode length.

The production team realized that that wasnt popular or going to sell BDs either so they said "bring back the plot, we started something, the viewers are going to want it to end."
So the drama team came back and they had battles and stuff.

tl;dr: Probably internal conflict and lack of vision lead to a directionless half-baked show. They should have tried to get two seasons, make one completely drama, one completely comedy like sword boys.

Stupid story. Fubuki was an awful MC. Series as schizophrenic not knowing if it wanted to be serious or comedic. Massive mood whiplash nearly every episode.

Keeping the Admiral but not really and him being off-screen 99% of the time was a terrible choice. Either make him a real character like IM@S anime Producer or just remove him and make it only grills allowed. Do one or the other. Don't make a half-assed middle thing that satisfies no one.

Didn't know what it wanted to be. It's like everyone on the staff wanted to do something but could never reach an agreement. Except for whoever had Fubuki as his waifu and got away with making her a mary sue who the world revolved around.

Curry episode was the best episode, that alone says a lot considering most of the anime was supposed to be "serious" when the SoL silly hijinks episode was the best and only remarkable thing of it all.

Ooi is one of the worst characters I've ever seen. On par with Ume.

I came here looking for people who were actually willing to defend the show but it seems like Sup Forums has too much sense to even ironically like it.

So I went to the English wikia's review page of the anime, all of the positive reviews come from people who claim to not have played the game.

I can't see how not playing the game can change your viewpoint in a way to make the show not garbage.

Fine and funny enough at times, and yes I do play the game.

Even KanCollefags hated the anime, the only people you'll see defending it are secondaries or Diomedea shills. Or shitposters trying to piss off anyone who plays the game and actually knows the girls.

Because the anime did away with a lot of the canon personalities and characterizations (easiest example being Kirishima taking her glasses in the last episode, despite her saying in one of her hourly lines that she can't fight without her glasses). In some cases they even went with the fanart personalities instead of the canon ones because of shitty memes like Akagi being a bottomless pit. And the biggest insult to injury was the staff saying that they made the show in a way that any player playing the game would have done the battles which implies that every player is a retard who sinks their ships, doesn't know about damecon items, doesn't have any buckets, sends fucking BBs on expeditions instead of DDs to gather resources, spams LSC when they don't even have any resources, and then when everything is dire take out their credit card and buy buckets from the cash shop to repair the girls who were stuck on the dock like the cranes.

It was really fucking stupid and anyone who plays the game, despite not even being that great a game, knows well just how stupid the plot was. If they weren't going to be faithful to game mechanics (ships don't sink from full health like Kisaragi did), then they shouldn't have added buckets or shit like that to the anime yet they did.

The key thing is that I don't even see how even a secondary would defend the show.

Not knowing a thing about kancolle isn't a reason to say, "the '''plot''' isn't all over the place and tonally doesn't make any sense at all."

A sad fact is that the wikia is also full of players who don't even know how to play the game right despite going to the fucking wikia and having all the information available translated in English to them. The place is full of retarded faggots.

I play the game and while those things irked me as well based on the idea that early on they force fed us game mechanics, you'd think they would stay consistent with them, at the end of the day I would argue that some sacrifice for story purposes are acceptable. Key caveat to that statement is I agree the Kancolle anime guys went to far. (I only hold this position because I believe the staff who did im@s CG did an acceptable job.)

I love the comfy SOL parts but I really want something like pics related. More intense robust battles with more "realistic" visuals and engagements. Needs to me more gritty.
Of course seeing the kind of animation that went into the easy, cutesy animation and the godawful CG that looks like it came from 2004, I can't even imagine what an actual quality CG/animation attempt like this would look like. Would either need like 4 studios, 5 years of work, or Shinkai's magic.

Yawn. The best part of that artist's work are the comedic and absurd parts, when it goes only for badass moments it always looks extremely try hard to me.

Focused too much on the lame characters, tried to be serious at times with awful execution, best moments are still weak compared to the average episode of a decent anime, abyssals look like a cool group but the series never went beyond "we need villains I guess" phase.
