From Raditz arriving on Earth to Gohan defeating Perfect Cell is the weakest part of Dragon Ball. And it's even worse animated.

Pretty great. I'm glad Goku didn't win the championship because I felt like that would have been way too predictable
I did the same thing, I was kind of impatient to get to Z at first, but I eventually just got really into Dragon Ball and was a bit sad to part with it for the next half of the story. First anime I ever watched too. I think Z has some of the best moments, but the way the story pans out gets worse and less well coordinated as the series goes on. Dragon Ball had very good flow and the placing and pacing of moments was prefect. In Z, too many things felt either half assed or dragged out. Transformations and fights scenes were great, but a lot of the stalling for time before Goku or Gohan arrived was tedious to watch. I remember it took something like a dozen episodes just for Goku to fly over to the fight with Frieza. The Android arc left me blueballed, and the Cell arc had me wanting every character to defeat Cell and feeling disappointed no matter who it was that did the job. The Buu arc was a complete mess with a few great moments scattered throughout a massive shitfest
I still love the series more than most anime I've seen, but as the great aspects get greater, the shitty aspects get shittier. Until GT/Super which are complete shit, don't waste your time with them unless you're really bored.

I think you have misunderstood. General Blue is portrayed as gay in both anime and manga, but the pedo thing is anime-only.
