I'm reading it for the first time right now. Just finished Conviction Just after the fight with Zodd at Godo's and I've gotta say...

The reason people love this is because it's so richly realized. The first arc is dark and gritty and more than a little edgy, but starting at the Golden Age and onward the whole series is filled with this amazing sense of scale. The escalation of actions, the passage of time, the growth of characters. It's all got an incredible sense of momentum, that the story is always in motion.

It's not only that, either. Every pivotal character, from Guts to Griffith to Zodd, and all the primary antagonist Apostles, they all have such complex characters. You see it in these threads all the time that "Griffith did nothing wrong," but even that is just an oversimplification of all the conflicting motivations of these characters. Characters like Rosine or Mozgus and his torturers, who can simultaneously be irredeemable villains, yet deeply sympathetic characters, because it was very human motivations that drove them to be what they are.

I've heard about The Boat, and Miura being an otaku piece of shit that basically abandoned the series for idolmaster, but where I am now in the manga, that hasn't set in yet. I was expecting, from both what I'd heard of the series and the beginning chapters, for this to just be BIG GUY WITH BIG SWORD BIG GUTS RIP AND TEAR and a dark fantasy world. I wasn't expecting this deepy, highly enriching story about ambition and revenge

Calling it now, the final chapter of berserk will be a timeskip to maybe ten years after the final confrontation with Griffith, where an older Rickert and Erika run a smith in Windham.
After a day at work, the two of them will take a trip outside the city walls, where they will lay flowers on a pair on unmarked graves in a meadow. Then, they will visit a cottage nearby,
where a young boy will sprint out the door to greet them. They all head back to the cottage together, where Casca awaits them.

Stay the fuck away from that new atrocity. Just go read it and trust me on that one. I didn't wanna read it for the longest time especially cause of the stories that it was on permanent hiatus but when I finally caved in couple of years back I just bursted trough 300 chaps like nothing.

I like it because I'm more a fan of western mythology than I am of anime.

I always try to avoid berserk threads on Sup Forums, and if you love Berserk I say you should do the same user, since you actually seem to like it, and for similar reasons I do as well.
The manga changes a lot later, but it's not bad. It's just the story progressing.
It's different, just like the golden age has a different tone than the black swordsman arc.
I think that one of the reasons that people hate the boat (aside the memes), is the time it took because of delays, and because the chapters were divided between showing Guts' party in the boat and what Griffith and co. were doing somewhere else.
If Berserk was always the same shit the same retards complaining now would whine that it's "three decades of the same thing".

first of all it's the first of "those series" you know works like GoT and Dark Souls, if you like those you'll like this (especially dark souls with the same "the thing that is destroying the world is also the only thing holding it together" dilemma). Guts is a great character being all the badassness of Kenshiro but with all the suffering of Shinji so you both admire and sympathize with him. Also the the art is Miura, what's not to love?
