If you're not pushing yourself, you're stagnating. You reach a point of diminishing returns, in any sport or activity, where X amount of work put in gives only fractional results. Besides maintaining a degree of fitness, there's no other benefit. If you're doing this for years on end, you're wasting your time. Before you know it, you're too old to be able to push yourself, and your body starts digressing into decrepitude. That's why, in my opinion, you have to approach fitness from the get-go, even from an hobby or amateur level, as a never-ending hurdle.
