The Pillows have so many damn albums that they range from amazing, to meh, to pretty bad. As a whole I'd say they're pretty solid though.

I think the reason Nujabes is beloved so dearly is primarily because he fucking died, but that doesn't mean his music isn't decent. Probably on the overrated side, still.

I do and have, and I mean Nujabes is fairly great, obviously never got to see his work go too off the wall because Seba fucking died. The Pillows 90's albums are great and I would say their last album was decent enough to give me reason to believe they'll pair up just fine with the new FLCL.

It's just so common to meet people who only like their music that's associated with their respective anime.

My experience is that any long-lasting Japanese band (lasts several years) tends to go through lots of changes, often putting out a shitty album here or two and sometimes they diverge so far from the sound I liked that I ignore any of their releases past a certain date.
Just like western bands, I guess.

Since 1998 the Pillows have stuck with a fairly consistent style. Before that they were really experimental and unpolished. 1999 seemed like their peak in creativity (or maybe its just my nostalgia)

All bands and artists go through peaks and troughs.

That being said, when Pillows and Nujabes peaked, they made really good music.

I don't like it all and I remove a song here and there, but overall quite enjoyable.

I started watching Samurai Champloo because I was a fan of nujabes and I think his work is pretty fantastic. He's one of the few artists who I believe is overrated on his fan's side, but underrated critically probably because of stigma surrounding artists who create OSTs and artists that do music for anime/otaku-based interests. He is highly influential on a ton of artists and a lot of his tracks still hold up to this day. That being said some tracks, like Thank You with Apani B, are not very good but most of his tracks range from solid to fantastic.

I haven't listen to much Pillows other than FLCL OST 3 and Happy Biovac but they are pretty good and hold up on their own outside of the anime they are associated with.

We've all met those dudes who never banched out into instrumental stuff or hip hop and got stuck on nujabes though.
What genre would the Pillows be considered? J-garage? The only other jap music I ever listen to is Kinoku Teikoku but that's quite different.
