contrary to popular belief guns are easy to use and do not require training to be effective. Any schmuck can hit a person at 50 yards with a reddot on an ar15. Also you can easily teach and train yourself to become much more effective.

Most military activity that isn't standing around waiting in formation or cleaning is sitting in a class going through powerpoint presentations. Then add the majority of the military who are pogs because support makes a large chunk of operations. I spent more time training myself physically, mentally, and at the range more as a civilian than I was as government property. There's a large chunk of post military civilians who does have some form of basic military experience.

So, the US wasn't able to use its 'whole' army since that would have meant having a full scale war which the US didnt want especially so close to China and the USSR
