Adding ecchi to a story from another genre is like adding moe or comedy, it's fine if it's additional service to a workable story. But if the story relies solely on the service without having anything else to offer like says, it's a bad thing that people often said it was killing the industry. Good thing lately, this kind of thing isn't as common as it was a few years back. If you're complaining about ecchi in a harem ecchi story, the fault lies with you.

Most fanservice is good, or at least fine, but occasionally a creator will throw ass and titties in the viewers' faces to distract them from the mediocre plot, which is when it gets annoying. At that point, the best thing to do is either masturbate or drop the show.
