A few years ago a bunch of white farmers and ranchers in SA approached the government with a plan to breed white rhinos but were denied permission by the current government.

There is also something to be said about changing standards over time with technology & science. Our ancestors didn't have any education or knowledge about human impact on environment & the animal kingdom, or any ability to do anything about it. We don't have that excuse now.

Breeding rhinos on farms has little to no effect on the demand for their body part which already exists independently. The rhinos farm would mostly ensure that the species survive. It is okay to be angry if these bred rhinos had their horns taken by the farmers and sold, you are free to disagree with such a behavior and consider it vile. However, regardless of whether it happened or not, breeding rhinos in captivity would still help to save the species.

You don't actually need to kill animals for ivory. You can cut off tusks and horns without killing the animal and those horns will regrow in a few years.

There is one dude right now who farms Rhinos. He owns something like 1400 of them. He properly raises them, hires guards to protect them and every few years cuts off their horns. He is hoarding so much ivory he could crash the entire market. I can't even remember how much he has but it's so valuable he has to store it in a secret location in a bomb proof vault.
But he cannot sell any of it.

If him and people like him could legally sell ivory, the price of it would drop massively and it would no longer be worth poaching.

The most ironic part is, everytime he tries to get laws changed he gets told to kill the Rhinos instead.
He doesn't have the money to keep raising these Rhinos forever. It's expensive and he has to hire a private military force to protect them. Eventually he will run out of money and these Rhinos will be hunted and killed.
He wants to sell the ivory to keep raising Rhinos but he gets shut down every single time. He's even told if he is that desperate for money, he should let people come and hunt the Rhinos (which is legal). That is right, selling ivory is bad but letting people hunt Rhinos is apparently fine.
