It's an insurance policy. It is technically more advantageous to have many children when the society is prone to outburst of violence and famine since if you only have a few, all your resources will be lost if the few you have are killed. 3. Up until recently there was a very high infant mortality rate, so the idea was have as any kids as possibly and hope a few survive into adulthood.
