Let me tell you a story about Israel, and the fight against the Left.
Back in 1948, right around the time Israel declared its independence there was an ongoing war between the Jewish population and the Arabs. A war that would only escalate ten folds when after the declaration when armies from all around the neighboring countries would join the fight to eliminate the newly born state. During that time there were various different militant groups in the Jewish community, all with differing political views and ideas of how to lead the fight. One such group was the “Irgun”. It was a right leaning political group and militia. Trying to gather fire power to help the fight during an international embargo, they wound up buying a ship full of military equipment that was set to sail from the coasts of Europe to Israel. The ship, called Altalena, was filled to the brim with military equipment, medical supplies and new Jewish immigrants from post-WWII Europe trying to both help the fight and start their new lives in Israel.
During the preparations, in Europe, Israel made the call and declared its independence, accompanying this declaration the self-elected government of the new state led by the left leaning David Ben Gurion decided that one of the first things on the agenda is to dismantle all of the various militant groups and build a unified army under the rule of the government. But instead of forming a new army from scratch, they used the already established group called the “Hagana” (defence, in Hebrew) changed its name to the IDF, outlawed the rest of the groups and encouraged their members to join the newly formed IDF. Groups that wanted to join as a unified battalion were denied and scattered throughout the IDF.
Back to the story. So the ship was owned by the now outlawed Irgun and was about to set sail towards Israel. So the leader of the Irgun, called Menachem Begin started negotiations with the government to let the ship come and bring the supplies (let me remind you, there is a war going on, and Israel is at a vast disadvantage, every bit counts and this shipment is huge). Ben Gurion agrees on the caveat that everything on the ship will be immediately seized by the IDF. Begin disagrees and wants about ten percent of the shipment to stay in the hands of the Irgun. During the negotiations the ship sets sail to Israel.

When it finally arrives, to a remote port not near a main city but near the coast of a mainly left leaning settlement called Kfar Vitkin which was a stronghold of the Hagana, as were the instructions laid by the government, the people of the Irgun started unloading the supplies from the ship. The leader of the Irgun, Menachem Begin, who was in Israel joined them in the unloading.
At some point IDF soldiers came and surrounded them giving them an ultimatum to give the IDF the supplies. When the Irgun members rejected (according to the official story, some say they were cooperative), the IDF started shooting and the Irgun returned fire, soon they returned to the ship and went ahead to a larger port in Tel Aviv, in the hope that the IDF wouldn’t shoot at them when in the eyes of the public.
When they arrived to Tel Aviv’s port, the IDF soldiers were waiting for them and another crossfire was held, this time it was more vicious fire, by that time, it was known to the IDF that Begin was in that ship and it looked like they were aiming at eliminating him. Finally they brought a cannon to the coast and fired at the ship setting it on fire and sinking it.

Yizhak Rabin, the person in charge of the IDF forces on the ground later called the cannon the “Holy Cannon” and later told proudly how he was “Banging them in the water” speaking about how they continued firing at the crew when they jumped in the water to flee the sinking ship.
Menachem Begin, luckily, didn’t die in that incident, and he would later become the leader of the opposition party in the knesset. Until in 1980, finally, became president and freed Israel from decades of socialist leftist rule.
I am sharing this to show you a lesson from history. It was not about weapons. It was about right vs. left. The left wing government that just seized power, used it immediately to shut down and eliminate if necessary political rivals. They had a war going on and sunk a ship full of supplies whilst shooting at fellow Jews that just fled the Holocaust.
In this incident, 16 members of the Irgun were killed along 3 soldiers of the IDF. Afterwards about 200 members of the Irgun were arrested in what was called a “cleansing” operation.

You left out the part where the Irgun was a ruthless terrorist organisation that slaughtered Palestinian civilians - men, women and children - wholesale, well before any of the other Arab states had declared war in Israel. In fact, the Arab invasion after Israel's declaration of independence can in no small part be attributed to the repeated atrocities committed by the Irgun. Not to mention that they carried out a campaign of terrorist atrocities against the British authorities that had been protecting Jewish communities from the Arabs.
You don't negotiate with people like that. You bomb them, shoot them, and leave them to drown. As an Israeli, I'd have thought you'd know that.

Their actions before the declaration are debatable, I think you are confusing the Lehi with the Irgun. Both were right wing, but the Lehi was far more extremist and borderline terrorist while the Irgun was not far off from the Hagana, which was, again, embraced by the left leaning newly formed government.
And in regards to acts against the Brits and the Arabs prior to the declaration done anywhere across the spectrum. It was a fight for independence, and in wars atrocities happen. No war is sterile and clean, yet even so, I think that for the most part, the Jews held a pretty clean and reasonable fight against the Arabs, especially dealing with civilian populations.
