First, the thing producer said about just being there to look cool only applies to the religious symbolism, not to the other themes and meanings of the anime. Second, that quote is BULLSHIT, plain and simple. You can say fans blow some things out of proportion and exaggerate, but denying that there's at least some meaning behind the religious imagery is pure dishonesty since some of those are literally on your face, like the end of the world, the rebirth of humanity and etc.
