About a single class period worth of understanding National Socialism (Racially motivated Communism), about 4 days and a dedicated movie day to cover the Holocaust. Yes thats literally it. We spent the next week on the New Deal back in High School.

Looking back, what are some of the big things you know about now that you think should have definitely been included in the lesson? Did you ever learn about Weimar in school, for example?

Also, should have put this in the opening post, but please note what grade level(s) at which you learned about Nazi Germany/Holocaust, whether you went to public or private school, and what country/region you went to school in.

Even though WWII was covered briefly every couple of years, 10th Grade with "World History" is where it was a massive focus. We'd spend upwards of a month covering the war and all its "niche details."
At no point did we learn about the Weimar Republic. We were just shown comical images of building-blocks made of money and early Nazi rallies. Looking back the implication was that Hitler just "took over" over night. These "lessons" were intertwined with the much more entertaining and time consuming 1920s culture of the US and learning about music and cars took up more time than European affairs.
Come WWII it was the usual, Japan struck first and we went to war with the Axis Powers. Does that sound abrupt? I think maybe 30% of the class could tell you the beginning year of WWII, with the rest telling you it was Pearl Harbor.
The Holocaust was covered in brief although descriptive terms, we watched The Boy In Striped Pajamas and then we went straight into Nukes. The classic "If you didn't have blonde hair/blue eyes you'd be dead" trope happened a couple times.

People think Public School is brainwashing but honestly if you didn't care about this shit, you probably didn't retain it anyway. Those that did care were probably smart enough to research themselves.

I appreciate you taking the time to answer so thoroughly. The reason I made this thread is because I was recently in a discussion with someone about Holocaust revisionism, and how the Holocaust and Nazi Germany are taught in schools in such a dumbed-down way, but you'll be crucified if you dare to question or dig deeper. I thought Sup Forums would be the perfect place to ask these questions to get a better sense of how common my own experience is/was.

Discussion really wasn't welcomed, but that isn't something I'd personally say is characteristic of Holocaust discussion, just Public School in general. You obviously had the kid who pointed out "some of Hitlers elite weren't blue eyed" and the teacher would shrug and say "They were hypocrites."
Moreso importantly was class interest at absolute zero. Over half slept through the movie, the rest were either "Eh" or "OHMAIGAWD DATS TERRIBLE xP" while taking a few text breaks. The two kids who cared to asks questions always got unsatisfactory answers or just got tropes shot at them, you could feel that. Overall its a really banal, predictable experience and I don't think it will change anytime soon. I think the only difference these days is that less youth care, because education has them wired "Pass the test, forget the rest."

Yeah, I definitely remember the idea being conveyed that Hitler swept in abruptly. We didn’t cover anything really except for 1940 - 45, mostly “Hitler took over, took control of other governments, set up a systematic killing of Jews, gypsies and homosexuals, got into fisticuffs with the Soviets, Pearl Harbor, a couple battles here and there, and the Allies won while the Soviets snuck away with Hitler’s remains.”
Nothing political or economic was taught about Germany at that time, just that Germany had “very low morale” after WWI but nothing like Weimar was focused upon or even mentioned by name.

at school my class only watched the boy in striped pyjamas, and that was it , I never seemed to grow up caring about the "holocaust" or caring for Jews

The most I was taught about anything remotely economic/political was that the Germans were in bad shape economically so they would 'follow anyone, even Hitler, who seemed strong' and that's why they were willing to go along with the mass extermination of Jews.

It was a theme, so that means 4 months. It was rather intense, but mostly focussed on the Netherlands. The focus was more on the heroism of the resistance. Some mentioning about the Holocaust.

Oh and stories about Anne Frank, that happened every goddamn year. We even had a musical covering it.

Can we please discuss the implications of history calling the nazi camp atrocities "Holocaust" which means = religious burned offering.

Why the ..... would someone name a genocide after a burned offering this is repulsive and disgusting and a disgrace for every dead and killed human being. Only Satan want human sacrifices.

OP here, this story is not about my time in school but my sister has a German Shepherd and recently she and her family were going to visit one of our cousins and her children. That cousin is super left-wing 'fuck drumpf!!' type of person, and she's already indoctrinated her 7-year-old child about the Holocaust so heavily that the child actually said he hated my sister's dog because it was a GERMAN shepherd and he hates Germany for 'what they did'.

In my school they pretented as if it came out of nowhere, as if the world hadn't pushed Germany to do this.

It was the equivalent of some firefighters putting out a massive fire that had burned down the country and then refusing to look at the causes of that because that might mean putting some of the guilt belonged to some of the people who had lost their homes. They acted as if all of Germany had taken an eight ball of cocaine and lashed out at everyone for no reason.

WWII was a waste of great people that could have made the world a better place but it's more disrespectful to diregard the lessons of the past. If we want to prevent another Holocaust and another WWII we have to have a real discussion and not just blame others for what happened. We're going to have another Would War because people refuse to believe that they could be that evil or that both sides had bad men on it. It still makes me mad to this day.

I was homeschooled and pretty much taught myself. Came to the conclusion that Hitler wasn't an evil man and that WWII was just a sad event all the way around.

8th grade was the year of feeling bad for all those poor yids. I remember not caring to learn about the Holocaust as it was boring. Read Night in 11th grade but I didn't bother reading it. You definitely weren't allowed to question anything. No "survivors" visiting the school though.

in BC, Canada the main goy-guilt paradigm is built around natives and residential schools and it works well because residential schools actually happened and were pretty fucked and now all the natives are skeezy alcoholics instead of being carefully cordoned and relatively undisturbed wildmen. Muh jewish six million was not a strong focus, still plenty of US media to go around though.

I would say it isn't worse, but do you think the current state of the US is good? When you go too far to the left, you awaken a far right, and we're seeing that happen in the US right now.

It was a long time ago, I remember the Anne Frank name but didn't care about the story. What bothered me was another book about jews being thrown into ovens, a fucking illustrated kids book with nazi guards pushing people into a boiler furnace. Wish I kept that book just to show the bullshit taught back then
