Thoughts on fan service?

What are your thoughts on fan service in anime? Personally I think excessive Moe and fan service is cancer of the anime industry. When I see fan service in anime/manga that try to have some sort of story or over arching plot, I see it as nothing more than the writer having little faith in their story being good and so they rely on soft core porn to keep otakus and horny teenagers hooked and buying perverted
merchandise. It is also one of the reason's why anime gets so much shit from non-anime viewers and the media.

At the same time however I have no issue with anime or manga whose ALL about fan service such as prison school for example. It's a genre on its own. Some people love it and others don't, that's fine. When the fan service feels forced especially in dramatic scenarios is where it comes off as cringey for me like pic related anime, Heavy Object. Female character sits in an ejector seat which goes haywire and starts to strangle her to near death. perfect time to for fan service. Anyway what are your thoughts?

Go back to whichever shithole you came from.

tl;dr

Service has always existed and I don't mind it as long as the show is good or it's top tier.
Heavy object was shit

I didn't go past the second episode. it was really bad

You stated your opinion, but I don't feel like you made any point that could be strong enough for comment.

I'm a fan. I'm getting service.

I really just want to know what /ayy general opinion on it. Whether any of you like it, love it, hate it, want more, want less? etc

I hate all this "Well, either do nothing, or go hentai". Such a simplistic mindset, I end up wondering how you people even survive with such boring views.

I like the middle ground, kinda like watching a Euro movie where you know the cute actress might get naked, but you never know when, thus delivering both the lewd and the thrill.

For a more relatable example to people of today, the difference is like finding a video with a small lewd on youtube vs going to redtube.

I didn't even finish the first episode.
>Girl is being killed by defective harness
>Better look at her boobs instead of saving her

It's shit. It makes anime shit.

>fanservice
More like manchildservice. I'm a fan and I don't feel serviced at all.

The idea that it's some kind of admission of little faith in their story being good is absurd because it assumes that no writer every wants to include fanservice (or rather, sexual titillation) out of a personal desire to include it in their work. Which is fucking ridiculous. Of course plenty of artists, writers and designers want to titillate in their work.

The concept of including sexual elements and having a story or plot are not and should never be treated as mutually exclusive, be it with them working together, or just there because they're something the creators enjoyed.

You missed on Metal Gear: the anime, the first episodes turned me off too.

If it's not obnoxious, it's fine. If it's a selling point of the show, like HOTD, Seikon no Qwaser or something along those lines, it's fine. It's awesome when it makes sense in the context of the story.

But shit like this is unwatchable. I liked the way you put it OP, padding the product by sexualizing random or distasteful situations is also what puts me off and I wish there was less of it.

This medium is capable of so much more when handled by the proper people.

>Female character sits in an ejector seat which goes haywire and starts to strangle her to near death.
There wasn't supposed to be tension there. HO is a comedy

You're right the show is a joke

>moe is bad
Lurk for 2 years before posting.

...

I am with on the all-or-nothing aspect, i also thing its a bit reductionist.

The best 'fan service' is those that's comes logically and serves another purpose then to show the viewer some bare skin, and fits the established tone of the show.
A good example where the last aspect was done very wrong in my opinion is the OVA for S1 of 'Yama no Susume': 3 minutes shorts of cute girls doing cute climbing (cute in the asexual puppy kind of way, about as non-attractive as you can get) and then the second half of the OVA is just slow panning shots of them showering.
The context in the show was logical enough, but it was such a departure from the established tone of the show.

I personally think you should fuck off.

Oh please, I have more chins than that

Just like almost anything else. In moderation it's a nice treat.

It's great

Yes this was completely unnecessary and deeming to males. Makes anime look bad desu

*demeaning

why is anno so perfect?

Well it's the first episode so it's saying it's a show that's gonna have sexy scenes just because. It's not like you've watched 3 episodes and WHAM fan service in your face.

ANY fanservice is cancer, unless it's poking fun at fanservice or otherwise extremely lighthearted. Pointless boob jiggles, half naked character, etc are all cancerous, but fanservice like that is specifically designed to service the kinds of fans Sup Forums has, so I don't know what kind of replies you expect to get honestly.

Oh, hello Re:ddit! Can you go back please we are full of summerfags.

>I have no issue with anime or manga whose ALL about fan service such as prison school for example. It's a genre on its own.

While you don't, I do. A story whose sole purpose is titillation with no substance behind it is basically porn without the best parts. There needs to be a cohesive story and scenario that makes it believable and can connect to the audience.

...

Nice pasta.

>It is also one of the reason's why anime gets so much shit from non-anime viewers and the media.

What? Most normie shit like GoT has like 500 times the fanservice of a typical anime

>These guys are against my opinion, fucking redditors

Fanservice is only good if it is a result of the sexual desire of the characters themselves.

So naturally, most fanservice in anime is shit because most of it happens in inappropriate situations and have characters react in ridiculous ways.

Yeah but the thing about game of thrones is that the characters don't scream KYAAAAH, react retardedly to sexual situations and the females don't look like underage girls

While I agree, that's what sells in the short run and that's what otaku buy.

It's nice when it blends in with the rest of the show naturally or is at least something interesting. I'd rather have none at all if it's just going to be yet another generic fanservice section with next to no animation and some poorly thought out lines.

/sa

Also most studios and authors depend on their IP to survive. Think it as them selling merchandise rather than stories.

Indifferent. I've never really seen people complain about fanservice unless you are some extreme normalfag.

If their IP was actually good, the forced fanservice wouldn't even be necessary.

>It is also one of the reason's why anime gets so much shit from non-anime viewers and the media.
who cares?

Gotta maintain that public image. I mean look at what the general populace thinks of furries

Only faggots hate fanservice.
Now go back to whichever shithole you came from faggot.

Furries made that reputation themselves by being obnoxious as fuck self-proclaimed martyrs, there's little to do with the actual obsession of fucking a "girl" with a certain percentage of wild instincts.

We NEED anime to be ignored by normalfaggots. I don't want shitters like OP in my media. If you don't like something that is defining inside a media, why don't you stop caring about said thing given that it's not made for you? Why should shit bow to your personal egocentrical desires, you self-sufficient piece of shit? You're no-one and nothing.

I'm fine with most fanservice, but this scene was STUPID.

For reference, I'm fairly sure this is Heavy Object Episode 1. She was getting crushed/suffocated by the belts because of a malfunction during maintenance and MC couldn't pull at the belts because his thought process went, "oh no, I might touch her breasts?!"

FUCK OFF. She's in danger and in quite a lot of pain. Come on, Kamachi.

Just about any fanservice is fine, the only ones I actually dislike is in a serious or horrific scene. Like in High School of the Dead showing panty shots while girls are being eaten alive, that's just disgusting. Or that one scene in Euphoria where a girls being electrocuted to death and they show a panty shot of her pissing and shitting herself.

This so much. That's why it's called "pandering to the lowest common denominator", especially with the Euphoria scene.

I wish I got pandered to, but my fetish is way too specific.

H-how specific?

I'd agree with that. Enjoyed HOTD, but they could have been more precise with their fanservice (the devouring panty shots could have been left out)

Hagure Yuusha a few seasons back also did the piss thing. It's just too much.

You're not wrong, but sex sells.

>Anyway what are your thoughts?

I think you should stay on Reddit.

>It is also one of the reason's why anime gets so much shit from non-anime viewers and the media.

Look into your heart my boi you know it to be true

What even is the anime studio's though process when making scenes like that? Do they think the average anime fan will actually enjoy seeing ecchi while a girl is being brutalized?

Otakus are weird

Honestly, nothing surprises me anymore after knowing there are people who get off to guro, vore and scat

I like it. The angry comments by normalfaggots like you and the other retards you mention in your post are just a bonus.

You fail hard on your second sentence, you piece of shit. Fuck off back to redit

Idiotic scum like you don't deserve a show like Heavy Object.

No user, you're the lowest common denominator, and no amount of shitposting and struggling will ever change this fact.

Normalfags feeling disgusted by the things I like is a not a bad thing at all.

The show was hot garbage user and you know it.

op is a woman

People who dislike how fan-service is used in shows don't have to be normalfags you know. They can also be people who like fan-service, but got sick shows that disregards it's plot because of it and just put it in inappropriate places that don't fit the show.

The more you are into fan-service shit the more the flaws of shows that used it and try to be taken seriously yet do it in such a comically bad way stands out more.

There is nothing wrong with enjoy a fanservice filled show. Even Anno is a well known Strike Witchesfag a show about flying, pantsless lesbians.

t. normalfag

Preach nibba

>you didn't actually like the show
>you hated it
>it was hot garbage
>why? Because I say so, and only I matter
Kill yourself, you retard. People are allowed to like what you dislike

You're welcome.

there's literally fanservice in all forms of media, it isn't just "nasty pantyshot ewww"

You're right, you're allowed to like trash

pretty shit

people should get some taste

I don't see fan-service as evil. The way it's implemented is the big issue and always will be. You assume people are only talking about panyshot shit when that isn't even the case.

>fanservice = lewd scenes

>muh refined taste
Kill yourself, normalfag

Fanservice is so childish. I only watch mature anime for mature people such as myself.

Like what?

Can't be more childish that children's card game advertisements with shitty animation

You are talking about an industry that targets kids, teenagers and manchildren. If you want something more "sophisticated" you need to move to a different hobby.

But it you let a few cameltoes and nipples distract you then you might not be as sophisticated as you think you are.

Woman(male)

I draw the line at headpats.

It works as long as it doesn't disrupt the tone of the show.

Take the classic "girl is in danger, guy tackles girl to safety, guy lands in girl's chest" move. If that's done as a conclusion to a battle, like a final explosion, then it works. The tension in the scene is over and the fanservice acts as a nice little way to get the audience to relax again. If the scene is during the final battle and the big bad is slowly coming closer to deal the killing blow, then it disrupts the flow and tonality of the scene.

Fanservice is fine as long as it's not out of place thematically.

Not him, but I do yearn for more high brow anime.
>industry that targets kids, teenagers and manchildren.
Exactly, the golden age is over. Art factories are operational.

There was no golden age though. Even old beloved shows such as Yatterman and Doraemon featured naked lolis, sex jokes and ecchi. In fact if you compare it with today's shows you are going to realize how softcore are things now.

Why don't you just fuck off if you don't like it? Your types never actually support the industry anyway.

>all these 12 year olds telling OP to fuck off while having absolutely no arguments whatsoever

kek

I don't mind it most of the time but I agree that it can demerit a series if used excessively.
For example, I couldn't get past episode 3 of Kill la Kill because fan service in that felt so tacky and retarded.

>being offended by Kill la Kill
You can fuck off too.

NEWSFLASH: People have different opinions on the way they perceive fanservice.

easy there buzzword-kun, you've really got to learn when to pull out the big guns or else you come off as a massive faggot

I was not offended m8, work on your reading comprehension. I just found it trashy as shit and lost interest when it was evident it was all the show had going for it.

I liked klk for the action and I respect your opinion for not wanting to watch it

It's great if kept in moderation

Please don't use hime next time you decide to shitpost.

It's the only reason why I'm here, to be honest.

I dont like it when its out of place in the show, also I find onsen episodes trite

I love it, cause I'm a lewd dude.

That being said, fan service is why I'll never watch anime in public or around anyone else. Because you never know when it will appears, and I don't want some dude on the plane looking over and seeing lewd shit on my screen

I don't like it. Unnecessary panty shots and bath scenes do nothing for me but take me out of the story and annoy me.

It's especially heinous when it's an otherwise entertaining action or sci-fi show that I would recommend to friends or family and all of a sudden there's awkward shit in it that's stupid in-context and would make me look like a creep with none for suggesting it.

Stop putting in shitty fanservice. Save the swimsuit and bath scenes and panty shots for the box set so you can still profit off all the lonely otaku without shitting up the main plot with it

>2017
>Sup Forums still thinks moe is not a genre
