I can't speak for the Brits, but over here in burgerland, my personal anecdotal experience is that we pretty much don't give a shit about other languages. Spanish is taught often over here though, and so are many other languages, but we mainly just learn and forget about them to get out of high school. In some states, I believe taking a foreign language class isn't even mandatory, because it's regarded as Fine Arts or something, so other Fine Arts classes can fill the elective credit requirement.
