Obviously this could be (forcibly?) made more efficient, but you can make reasonable arguments that through the past centuries various characteristics have been brought forward or thinned out due to the actions of society itself. Its an obviously effective system, but with humans you run into the issue of time, since you need to wait a while before being able to tell if what you did actually had an effect or not, with animals (that breed more often and develop faster) that process is more streamlined and obvious for the breeder to make further decisions.
