European-Americans (as well as Canadians, Aussies, and Kiwis) are compelled to create the meta-ethnic "white" identity to bolster their numbers against competitor groups who use the same meta-ethnic constructs ("black", "Latino", "Asian", "Native", etc.) for the same reasons.
I don't know that it's necessary at present for Europeans who can generally rely on their historical and sub-racial ethnic identities to assert their identitarian interests, but in 50 years I'd be willing to bet that Englishmen will regard Polish and Italian Britons as being as "white" as they are.
In some ways, I'm glad this bullshit is happening, if the net result is white/European solidarity and the end of stupid, internecine sectarian squabbles (looking at you, Norn Iron).
