JoJo ASB's opening is fucking cool.
m.youtube.com/watch?v=ILmX5MfGuxg

...

I remember when they started using awful cg everywhere for background mobs and cars in the mid-early 00s.

...

Sometimes it can look decent enough

ID-0 was pretty nice.

Classic.

...

Is that shit for real?

If i didn't know it was Berserk i'd guess it was one of those Inferno cop funny moments when they ironically use the same drawing for comical purposes.

It is indeed real.
And that's from the Bluray which is "Fixed".

Berserk is a "special" anime

...

What does the unfixed version look like?

I hope Iam dying in the near future

From memory pretty much the same, but I really don't want to relive it by looking it up

The same. This particular scene didn't get fixed on BD.
Honestly it's only worth watching for the blatantly traced manga panels like pic related.

I unironically am.

...

That's one hell of an outfit.

That's amazing really.

...

Movie budget CGI in chinkland is unironically prett damn good. And unlike homestate they actually occasionally try the semi realistic thing.

Friendly reminder to FUCK POLYGON. Incompetent hacks. TOEI has better CG. Everyone has better CG (except Linden). Actually fuck Linden too.

Age of CG is welcome so long as Sanzigen and Orange are leading the way. Polygon needs to fuck off. Fuck Polygon and their Netflix sponsorship.

Damn, that's pretty smooth.

It's amazing what having a little talent and the intelligence to not gimp your framerate on purpose to imitate 2D (while forgetting to use the rest of the toolbox 2D uses to cover up the lack of frames) can do for your anime.
Fuck Polygon.

Gotta love that they only bothered to make 4 different guys and just copy-pasted them in the exact same pose and everything

I'm ready to watch anime die.

Imagine how great cgi and animation could've looked in the west if they weren't obsessed with that purposefully ugly kid cartoon style.

Is this going to be like the 80's was for western animation? Like, devolving into cheap korean sweatshop studios and making shit like transformers, TMNT and He-man tier animation until it dies?

I never really understood why it was so popular over traditional animation. I just feel like it looks very ugly.

It's probably cheaper.

I'm sure it is but it looks like shit.

Zootopia cost millions in research. Paper and cells would have cost less, so guess again. Then again, no one draws on cells anymore so the labour cost of the few people who do would have been pretty exorbitant as well.

You're right that it looks worse most of the time, but the gantz movie actually looked really good using that style of cgi to make a realistic/anime blend.

...

Cheaper and easier.
I'd also assume that there are more 3d animators available than 2d nowadays.

As you say, training and looking for people to do this shit would probably cost a fortune. It's not cheaper necessarily because it's less costly in terms of material and research, it's cheaper because it's easier to do and there's more people studying it. So my point stands, it's fucking cheaper.

Unless the art becomes popular again and you start seeing a renaissance of cottage industries that specialize traditional animation pop up everywhere CG is the sad future that awaits us all, until it becomes so shit and unpopular the corporate faggots decide to invest on traditional animation again.

>Cheaper and easier
/3/ and /ic/ would suggest otherwise on both counts. 3D animators get paid more, have a higher initial cost for equipment, and require more training. At best you could say "setting keyframes with a model is less annoying than drawing hundreds of keyframes".

...

>until it becomes so shit and unpopular
So how long you think that will take? Another decade of crap?

Basically all this means that there is too much anime being made. The industry will snap, and then shrink. Then we will have less anime per season and better quality (in theory). Too many damn 2D artists making too many shows that no one wants to buy, so no one makes money.

Animation in general is dead outside of videogames for now. We wait for it to crash again and reap the quality that comes after that. Like tiny plants growing after a forest fire.

Calm down, user. People praise 80's anime a lot, but when you see the animation on popular shit like LOTGH, you realise that they have always cut corners on shit. 90% of anime in the 70-80's was borderline He-Man tier. Shit animation and good animation have always coehisted, it's just that cheap/shitty animation on anime is now heavily associated with CG.

3d animation is easy. Hell I can load up a free version of milkshape right now & crank out something decent looking comparable to say Berserk within minutes.
I don't know why 3d animators would get paid more than traditional animators.
That's sort of like paying a burger flipping robot a hundred dollars an hour while paying a human worker 7 dollars an hour.

Please download MMD and produce smooth character acting. Something that could pass as professional or semipro.

I recommend taking a free model of Miku and having her wave cutely. Don't forget your shaders and camera work, I'll rate you on that too. Not even a CG "artist" myself, but saying they don't have a rare skill that requires considerable training is laughable.

What the hell that actually looks good.

my.mixtape.moe/pqpavt.webm

...

Gross

No, you.

my.mixtape.moe/tkeuxz.webm

Cute but yuri is gross.

Maybe it's because I grew up doing it just as a hobby I think it's easy.
For me the hardest part is rigging the models the way I like with every little bit rigged including hair & such and getting the weights right.
But once that's done the animation is simple & enjoyable it's not tedious & demanding enough to require large sums of money to do.
I don't even have it downloaded on this PC & I know it's alot to ask you to believe some random user on Sup Forums but it's not that difficult of a task.

Here's a simple animated pig using milkshape
youtube.com/watch?v=V-XVqVjlX5Y

So figure you would set the background & maybe add some billboard type objects in there & give them a little movement for extra life & position the camera in a way it looks 2d. Then set the frame & go from there when done just record the screen.

Or you could even take it a step further & load it up in a 3d engine with some nice shaders to make it look 2d.

Imagine being able to animate in real time using a game engine you could produce a full anime episode in 30 minutes + the time it would take to add in voices & other finalized tid bits

...

I understand what you're saying. But the skillgap seen in amateur CG videos on Nico and YT is telling another story.

but post those gifs

Tanoshii

This was so bad that I almost dropped the show right there. Glad I didn't.

Yo user, can you give me the sauce of this? when I image searched it, it litteraly gave me porn

>gave me porn
Google results are based on your past activity.

You have to consider what sector of the industry you're in.
The things you've listed are mostly true for western cg projects and feature films.
TV anime cg is bottom of the barrel garbage excluding anime backed by big toy companies.

DBFZ and xrd aren't really a good example.
Each frame of animation for the models in those games has to be worked on individually to configure shadows and lighting that don't necessarily match up to the stage lighting to get that signature look, they said it's very labor intensive and not suited for things outside of 2d fighters.

iqdb gave me porn not google, google gave me an image of a ferris wheel

No programmers in those game sat around doing the shadows & lights frame by frame themselves the engine did everything for them.
The reason I posted dbfz is because how they used those shaders in a 3d game to make it appear 2d & looked so close to the actual anime.

Yeah that's what i thought, it needs to actually look good without trying to imitate 2d.

I don't think iqdb indexes anime at all.

Check out the Borderlands 3 Unreal Engine 4 Tech Demo. It's a good example of how the engines do all the work. With the right programming a full beautiful anime episode could be done in real time using these new engines & old techniques.
youtube.com/watch?v=-cw2gXq83n8

Explain how this looks so much better than "good" CG like Berserk, which probably cost 100 times as much.

...

I hope it doesn't suck.

There's no animation in this tech demo at all. What are you trying to prove with this video?

Oh yeah i've already seen it not the whole thing tho, but yeah it looks goddamn baller.

>3D animators get paid more, have a higher initial cost for equipment, and require more training
But do you require the same amount of manpower? This is a genuine question, I don't know the answer.

>iqdb gave me porn
That's because iqbd is a fucking porn search engine, you dumbass.

I can see her pantsu.

shadows & lighting & shaders

It's an MMD model, of course you are.

>Everyone ignoring the idol CG again

...

Ajin 3d was good enough, I wish Berserk was animated like that.

Idol CG is fucking terrible, and it gets the kids used to it, so it will be broadly acceptable in a few years.

At least they used CG well.

PROTIP: Use the saucenao link on the iqdb page.

So Girls und Panzer is a thing, when are they going to make Boys und Warthog?

I'm glad they decided to make all the tanks CG, it means they retain all their detail even at long-distance shots.

>boys
Not going to sell.

CG just looks ugly.

Imagine how awful it would have worked in standard TV 2D

Ok fine. Girls und Warthog. It's already a thing.

d254andzyoxz3f.cloudfront.net/banzai_fc_-8623.jpg

Anyone have something I can use to get started with simple 3D animation.

MMD, SFM

Your mom's ass.

The JoJo openings did it pretty right
openings.moe/?video=Opening1-JoJo2012
openings.moe/?video=Opening2-JoJo2012

I feel like 2D CGI would do better there.

It's not purely 3D CGI though. There's a lot of 2D there to enhance the quality.

>2D CGI
What

>What is a wacom tablet

Go watch the the GDC arcsys presentation, they literally go over the entire process for you.
They can't completely rely on the dynamic lighting from the character specific light sources because the models are oddly shaped.
To circumvent that, they have to go in and edit normals and the lightsource for every frame to ensure they get the desired shading.
There's a reason why it takes them upwards of 4 months to build a single character.

>ID-0
Yes, I liked how that handled things in general.

This is the ideal CGI. You may not like it but this is what peak performance looks like.
