Kumiko at the start didn't want to join, didn't even want to play the eupho, had no motivation to get better. By the end of season 1, she outright says she loves the eupho, she wants desperately to get better, wants to be special like Reina.

I think what people see is that narratively speaking, a "suffering moment" is critical to having a leap of character development and by that faulty logic, KyoAni shows are boring, undeveloped, etc.
