NATO backs bigger training mission in Iraq – Stoltenberg
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday that the military alliance was ready to answer a US call for NATO to expand its small training mission in Iraq. The move could support reconstruction of the country after three years of war with Islamic militants. Speaking at a news conference in Brussels, Stoltenberg said,“We have to win the peace.”The NATO head also said he expected the alliance’s defense ministers to start planning for a bigger mission at a meeting in Brussels on Thursday, Reuters reports. The final decision could be made in July.

Turkish president says Cyprus should not ‘overstep the mark’ after ship incident
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on Cyprus not to “overstep the mark” in the eastern Mediterranean on Tuesday. Greek Cypriots had earlier accused the Turkish military of obstructing a vessel exploring for natural gas over the weekend. Erdogan told members of his ruling AK Party in parliament that Turkish warships and security units were monitoring developments in the region, Reuters reports. On Monday, the European Union called on Ankara to avoid threats and“refrain from any actions that might damage good neighborly”ties with Cyprus.

US funding of Syrian YPG to impact Turkey’s decisions - Erdogan
A decision by the United States to continue funding the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia will affect Turkey’s decisions, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Ankara on Tuesday. He made the comment during a speech to members of his ruling AK Party in parliament. The warning came ahead of a visit this week by US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Reuters reported. Tillerson visits Turkey on Thursday and Friday, as the two NATO allies have diverging interests in Syria. Ankara sees YPG militia as a terrorist organization and an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Washington has backed the YPG in the fight against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in Syria.

Afghanistan holds conference to plot course against terrorism in region
Kabul is hosting military chiefs from several neighboring countries for a conference to plot a course on how to deal with escalating terrorism in the region. Those attending the gathering on Tuesday in the Afghan capital include Pakistan’s army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and US and NATO representatives. Both Afghan and US officials are ratcheting up pressure on Pakistan to close Taliban sanctuaries on its soil, while Islamabad denies charges that it harbors militants. The army chiefs will also look at the region’s narcotics trade as Afghanistan hits record levels of poppy production, AP reports.

India warns Pakistan “will pay” after militants attack Kashmir army camp
India warned Pakistan that it would “pay for this misadventure” following a deadly attack by militants on an army camp in the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian army has ample evidence to prove that“the handlers of the terrorists were back in Pakistan,”Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said late on Monday. Saturday’s attack on the camp near Jammu, the winter capital of the state, was the worst in months. Six soldiers and the father of a soldier were killed, while women and children were among 10 wounded, Reuters reported. At least three militants were killed in the attack, Indian officials said, adding that the attackers were members of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant group.

CHINA WARNS IT MAY INTERVENE IF INDIA'S MILITARY INTERVENES IN MALDIVES >The critical situation of Maldives may be getting even volatile as Asian superpower China warned South-Asian giant India of intercepting troops should they cross into Maldivian waters for state intervention. >China's warning was reported through the country's top news agency Global Times, with the country strongly warning India that the global superpower was not hesitant to intervene with the military should New Delhi make such a move in meddling with 'the internal politics' of Maldives. >"This is the country's internal affairs and China firmly opposes outside interference. More than that, China should take necessary measures to stop India if New Delhi moves to intervene militarily," read the editorial post of Global Times. FNR: As the Maldives Crisis continues, it may become even worse, as China strongly warns India, amid calls from the Maldivan Opposition and some in India for the Indian Armed Forces to defeat the Maldivan Government after it became increasingly authoritarian and definied the Maldivan Supreme Court with support from the Armed Forces. The Maldivan Government rejected a Chinese offer for intervention already, however China continues to deter India from intervening as it previously had in the late 80s. The crisis began roughly a fortnight ago when the Maldivan Supreme Court appealed the conviction of Opposition MPs, a move blocked by the Armed Forces, who then sealed parliament and arrested more MPs. Since then, the Maldivan Government declared its support for the military, and the Supreme Court backed down.

EU to deploy police in Albania to handle immigration
The European Union and Albania agreed on Monday to allow European police to deploy on Albanian territory to handle immigration issues. Brussels hopes the move can be a model for other countries in the Western Balkans. Dimitris Avramopoulos, the EU's commissioner for migration, home affairs and citizenship, initialed the accord along with Albanian Interior Minister Fatmir Xhafaj, Reuters said. EU member states must approve the deal. The European Commission is negotiating similar agreements with Serbia and Macedonia, the EU delegation in Tirana said. The EU have aimed to improve immigration operations in the Western Balkans, especially since 2015 when the countries in the region became the main route for the biggest migration into Europe since World War Two.

Iran to continue support for Syria against terrorists, aggressors – aide
Iran will continue backing the Syrian government in the face of terrorists and aggressors, the Iranian supreme leader’s aide on international affairs said Monday.“Iran’s presence in Syria is for the sake of defending the axis of resistance according to agreements [between Iran and Syria],”Mehr news agency quoted Ali Akbar Velayati as saying. Commenting on Western politicians’ claims that Iran is destabilizing the region with its presence in Syria, Velayati underlined that the region belongs to the people who live there. The UK, the US, and France“are not the countries of our region,”he said.“If we are in Iraq and Syria, it is because the legitimate governments of these countries have asked for our help,”the former Iranian foreign minister said. Speaking on Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers, he said there is no way to review or revise it, adding that Iran“will concede to no condition under any circumstances.”

TWO SEPARATIST GROUPS JOIN 2015 NATIONWIDE CEASEFIRE AGREEMENT IN MYANMAR >abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/groups-join-myanmar-governments-peace-process-53039346 >Two ethnic rebel groups have joined Myanmar's long-delayed peace process, a small step forward in ending decades of civil strife. >The signings of the Nationwide Cease-fire Agreement in Myanmar's capital, Naypyitaw, on Tuesday by the New Mon State Party and the Lahu Democratic Union are the first since the original eight groups joined in 2015 under the previous military government. Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government, which took power in 2016, pursued the process. >The government hopes to achieve a comprehensive cease-fire with all groups, but the biggest and most powerful ones, especially the Kachin and the Shan, have not signed, insisting they want a comprehensive political solution before laying down their arms. FNR: Two separatist groups have agreed to join the 2015 Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement in Myanmar as the nation attempts to stabilise itself after decades of separatist conflict. The Lahu Democratic Union is the second group representing the Shan people. To date, Kachin rebel groups, arguably the largest and most threatening, have not agreed to the ceasefire.

>Erdogan calls on US to ‘stop this theater with Daesh’ in Syria According to Erdogan, Washington’s decision to give financial support to the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia will affect Ankara’s decisions.
“We have 911 kilometers of border with Syria. What is their [US’] connection with the Syrian border? They have already spent 550 million dollars [to help the YPG], but now they want to increase this figure to three billion. You say that you are fighting against Daesh. And how many Daesh members did you destroy? Those who fought against Daesh are now fighting against Turkey. No one has the right to use Daesh as an excuse. It’s time to finish this theater with Daesh, it’s time to remove the masks,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.
In an address to the members of his ruling AK Party, Erdogan stated that a decision by the US to continue to fund the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia will affect Turkey’s decisions.
“We are told: ‘If we are hit, we will respond.’ Those who say this, have never tried an Ottoman fist in their life,” the Turkish president added.
The president has slammed Washington, saying that as NATO members, Turkey and the US are equal.
“If you say that the YPG is not a terrorist organization in our opinion if you are attacking a NATO ally, you should stand against it as a member of NATO,” he said, adding that the US “wants us to surrender to terrorists.”
Earlier this month, Erdogan claimed that US presence in Syria’s town of Manbij was aimed against Turkey, Iran and maybe Russia.

The speech of the Turkish president comes amid the ongoing operation of the Turkish Armed Forces dubbed “Olive Branch” in Syria’s Kurds-dominated Afrin. The operation is carried out against Kurdish YPG forces which Ankara believes have links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), designated as a terrorist organization in Turkey.
The operation came as a response to the statement made in January by US Col. Thomas Veale, who said that the US-led coalition had been training the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that comprises the YPG to create a 30,000-strong force to maintain security along Syria’s borders.
Furthermore, last year, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim condemned the US for its support for the free withdrawal of a Daesh convoy that consisted of 50 trucks with 10 of them being loaded with heavy weapons from the Syrian city of Raqqa.
This can only mean that the Russians have finally integrated their AA systems with the Syrian system.

EX-GEORGIAN PRESIDENT, TURNED UKRANIAN GOVERNOR AND OPPOSITION LEADER, IS DEPORTED TO POLAND AFTER CALLS FROM GEORGIA >npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/12/585133656/ukraine-ejects-ex-georgian-president-deporting-him-to-poland >Ukrainian authorities have deported Mikheil Saakashvili, the former Georgian president who has emerged as a vocal antagonist of the government in Kiev. Ukraine's border agency confirmed his deportation to Poland on Monday, while videos on social media purported to show Saakashvili getting seized by masked men. >"This person was on Ukrainian territory illegally," the agency said in a statement released Monday, "and therefore, in compliance with all legal procedures, he was returned to the country from which he arrived." >Representatives of Saakashvili are describing the incident in starkly different terms. FNR: Former Georgian President and Ukrainian Governor of the Odessa Oblast and Opposition Leader, Mikheil Saakashvili, has been deported to Poland, after warrants the Ukrainian High Court denied his citizenship, after calls for his arrest in Georgia were issued concerning corruption.
On another note, Saakashvili is the guy seen chewing his tie on national television during the Russo-Georgian War.
