I wondered about that. Early on in the manga she pinches his butt, and gives him back a dropped pencil wrapped in chewing gum, but it's all so vague and massively outweighed by her obsession with Kaji. She could just be teasing him the same as she'd tease any male near her, for twattery reasons.

And she claims to have moved in for "strategic reasons". Obviously she says all sorts of contradictory things, so you can't tell which ones are the lies, but that line might actually be true - he threatened her position as best pilot.

Your pic was a heartwarming moment, but it could easily be just an honest bit of friendship (at long last).

And she thought he was dating Rei and didn't sweat it. But it's not nothing, there hasn't been an Asuka who thought nothing of Shinji.

Asuka obsession with kaji is no different from a teenager girls obcession with justin beiber or whoever is the newest star teen. It's completely unachievable, and most girls grow out of it and even laugh at the memory.

Asuka is desperate to find anyone, amd kaji was probably the only person from nerv who didn't disrespected her. But as she was making friendships in the middle of the series, her situation was improving.

He wasnt wrong though. She was clingy and pursuing an extremely unhealthy relationship with someone twice her age.
He was trying to help her realize she was in the wrong path without being rude or disrespecting her.

He did have scenes where he showed that kind of insight and patience. With Shinji and Misato. He didn't hint special consideration for Asuka, she was the only time he was visibly annoyed.

Kaji met Asuka on the sea voyage or shortly before while touring NERV-03 under his official role as inspector from the UN. The implication from dialogue is Misato was with Asuka in Berlin before she transferred to Tokyo-3 about a month before the show.
