The first episode or two of Gundam 0083 are centered around a Federation base somewhere in Australia (mostly what you see is desert, so reasonable accuracy), a colony got dropped on Sydney at some point in one of the other series. A monster of the week attacked some Australian city in an episode of RahXephon.

It's mostly because of the time before WW1. Like other eastasian countries, they looked around in europe for inspiration of how a modern society works. They fell in love with the Prussian Ordnung, which is why the traditional school uniform for boys is modeled after the prussian army's.
