I'm sure there's a lot of little girls playing it, and they do advertise it during the anime, so it's not something that's not obvious to them.
That said, I think the playerbase does have a lot of big friends. The most recent event referred to the player as Shinjin-kun. Photokatsu uses -chan. Precure's game in comparison uses very little kanji in comparison to either Pripuz or Photokatsu.
Not to mention Pripuz keep push paid-exclusive gachas, so there's that against their kid-friendliness.
It's along unit lines. Solami, Dressing, Gaarmageddon, Tricolore.

Why would you catch up? Chances are the crossover is pretty irrelevant to the plot and even if it is Aikatsu always have the "Previously on Aikatsu Stars.." segment.

First crossover episode: Luminas come to an idol festival hosted by Yotsuboshi, everyone appears. Akari, Sumire and Hinaki seem to get paired up with Yumeme Rolling Stone and Karate Chop.
Second crossover episode: Yume, Roller and Koharu are involved in a shipwreck and arrive to an uninhabited island. They meet Soleil and Tristar and work together to survive.

The shipwreck episode is the real ending of Stars. Everyone died after Venus Ark crashed. Yume, Roller and Koharu are in purgatory and that's the reason they're meeting with the DED idols.
