What the appeal of this?

What the appeal of this?

Fun dialogues and cool visuals and camera angles.

only native speakers of Japanese can answer that question

Great visuals, goes deeper on characters problems than most series, fantastic voice acting and great OST. It's also a LN adaptation that go further than 1-3 seasons, not just a "read the books to know how it ends" advertisement.

Its twilight for weebs

manlet power fantasy

it's a filter for normalfags

...

1) it's romantic in a way that most shoujo anime fail to manage; and I'm not talking about the massive harem, if you don't fall in love with Hitagi by the end of episode 5 then you don't have a heart.

2) endearing MC; Araragi is one of the most appealing MC's in anime, either through his character design, VA or bizarre personality.

3) cute girls + fanservice == YAY!

4) word games (you have to know japanese well to get this one, but for me the puns, both good and groan worthy are pretty funny and clever)

5) manages to take typical teenage melodrama, then color it with supernatural shit which may or may not exist and which may or may not be in the heads of those involved, while NOT always solving the problems simply coming to "accept" them is often the solution. This makes it startlingly adult, as most of growing up is learning to accept bad shit happens and its not the end of the world.

6) sexy; this is more a shaft thing, but shaft managed to make its fan service sexy in a way that most fanservice anime wishes it could manage. Overall the packaging ends up sleek and sexy and most people don't feel embarrassed enjoying it like they do when they watch something like the 10 minute long panty shots of shiro's cameltoe in no game no life.

7) Mystery; yes it's a weak mystery anime, not a truly dedicated one, but the mystery does keep the plot moving along without needing a meta arc.

8) Oshino Meme/Kaiki Deishou; adult male characters with agency and relevance in a harem anime? unheard of usually. best part is they're memorable characters

9) It's written for Otaku by an Otaku; NisiOisiN manages to keep the dialog and references relevant for the intended audience, this is more a commentary on otakuism/culture then it is on high schoolers. And as a result it resonates like no other series for most anime fans.

It's real interesting

For some reason I immediately thought that Mayoi was spreading her pussy off camera.

too much hentai rots your brain

a based mc

I'd say 5) is why most of the fanbase likes the series so much, especially since a lot of the discussion is about the original novels which don't contain 3) and 6). And I also wouldn't say that it just "takes typical teen melodrama",a lot of the drama comes from things pretty unrelated to be being a teenager and certainly not typical.

Another point of interest is the sheer variety the stories in the series have. From Araragi's problems balancing teen life with the supernatural, to Shinobu's centuires long tale of wandering the planet, to Sodachi's depressing existence of isolation, etc.

none, Anime made by shaft is shit

I won't lie. Araragi is gar as fuck.

pseudointellectualism and the underlying desire to still jerk it off to shitty harem anime despite making fun of others for doing the same.

>She doesn't Vampire Punch him
What?

2 for me, especially in the novels. There aren't many MCs in anime I can say I like.

5,6 also

I dunno if we read the same thing but the girl characters are cute and and there is plenty of sexy in the novel, shaft just also killed it with the animation. In fact I found myself enjoying the girls more reading then I did watching.

The girls are cute because their actions in the novels tho, not their designs or voices tho, and the visceral appeal of seeing a naked girl in a sexy scenario is gone, it stops beinf "fanservice". It's definitely different in the novels than in the anime.

>it stops beinf "fanservice"
...why? Are you telling me something can only be sexy when its shown and not described? That's not true at all. Not to mention all the extra content that's not in the animation that contributes to the girls characters and sexiness.
>The girls are cute because their actions in the novels tho, not their designs or voices tho
believe it or not there are visual designs in the novel through illustrations and descriptions, and they do pretty much the same things as in the animation. A lack of a VA doesn't somehow make them not cute, not to mention if you watched the anime first you can easily hear them in your head.

Did you even read the novels?

Modern /fa/

this is weird seeing after watching kizu now

I guess im pretty heartless then because I despise Hitagi but love all the other characters

i'm that guy a few drinks past drunk, and I think you're allowed to hate hitagi.

I just think she's portrayed as one of the most human characters in the series in just 5 episodes. Remember senjougahara-tore was a real thing. and the reason why bakemonogatari hit it's stratospheric status. in season 1. she was the first tsundere who otaku literally fell in love with. Sure other bake girls probably surpassed her over time, but it was Senjougahara who gabbed everyone's attention and hearts.

I still proudly declare her as my waifu, 8 years since this show first aired, and never once in 8 years wavered in my love of her. I'm sure i'm rare around these parts now days with the season waifu bullshit, but hitagi was the real deal.

Wish I could join you friend I could go for a couple drinks right about now and I respect your opinion, I just could never really get into her character for some reason, I loved the scene of her and Araragi watching the stars I thought the dialogue was great and it was just overall a great episode but the more I saw of her the more I disliked for some reason.

But what do I know, Im a Nadekofag

Kizu is just better without her.

snake-fag

lol

seriously though, she's cute and if you want a wallflower as a waifu I can get it, but the Kaiki arc highlighted how shallow that view of a moeblob is... if she's still you're waifu after the medusa arc then its legit.

Kizu did Hanekawa SO MUCH justice, those movies made me like her a shit ton more than I previously did

...

Rrrg looks like a dwarf

Funny you say that I just finished that arc today lol, and yeah I still would say she is my waifu, I know its a shallow viewpoint but Ive always had a thing for the shy type whether it be 3D or 2D, not to mention she has my two favorite OP's in the series

gratz

Thanks brotha, i'll invite you to the wedding

Why would she though, she obviously liked it.
