Them being kids is critical to the story's plotline and tone. such innocience contrasted with the utter and certain death they are facing is the very nature of the show, and of the abyss itself.

The abyss looks like a great, virgin, innocent landscape. in actually it's Uncle Lovecraft's funtime murderhole. an adult or adolescent would break, but a child with a child's determination can make them have hope up until they die.

You forgot episode 4, which had 1.5. That's perfectly in line with that.

They adapted 1.5 chapters this time. We aren't even going to reach the end of the Nanachi arc with this pacing.

I haven't made a wrong guess yet based off the preview pics, even when people were so certain that birds would be in episode 4. I personally would like them to go a bit further, but if they really did intend to end it at pic related, they need to slow down a bit due to the pacing of the first few episodes, which is what I think they're doing now.

It will, mitty liberation and the party leaving for the 5th layer is a decent ending point, anything earlier than that can't happen because it wouldn't make any sense.

Think about it, would they really spoil the entire episode in the previews by showing her kicking the shit out of them? All that happens between them arriving at the outpost and the confrontation is they talk to Ozen then Riko pisses the bed. That's not enough to fill 20 minutes

No because they never intended to animate the 5th layer, the actual pacing is perfectly fine to end the show at the ending of 4th layer
