Katana (刀) is not the only Japanese sword. What Kamina wields is a Nodachi (野太刀) which was originally used as an anti cavalry sword however was not commonly used as spears (Yari 槍) were more effective. Most Nodachi are ceremonially crafted to show a swordsmith's skills
