I don't really know where the plot will go in future installments but it would be neat to see other people's reactions when they see that Akko's magic is mediocre to decent w/out the Rod.

I think that's the direction the plot is going. Much like Chariot, Akko won't be able to preform consistently new and exciting magic each day. It'll be interesting though, considering Akko actually has loyal friends to guide her through depression.
